Z4 2006 2.0 - Hood/Roof Problem

Hello Z4 owners, its been some time since my last post but I was wondering if any of you could help me out with this issue Ive been having with my 2006 Z4 2.0,

Basically Ive owned the car (second hand) for a few months now, ever since I got it I noticed that especially when pressing the button to close the hood back up it takes slightly longer than usual... at times refusing to rise up and latch on at all... I press the close button, the hood rises about 10 cm and is stuck in that position and lowers down only when I let go of the button ... sometimes when I have left it for a few mins or switched the car on and off and tried to close it again it works (but again slower than usual).. Last night I was driving with the roof down and got to the point where I wanted to put it back up as I was soon to be joining a highway, so I stopped the car by the side of the road and tried (P.S I haven't had the roof problem for a few weeks now) - and it just wouldn't go up, I tried about 5 to 10 times and nothing even with a little (gentle) manual assistance by lifting the hood up while the passenger was pressing on the close button... eventually it worked after a lot of frustration...

What do you think the problem is... does it need some oiling somewhere? Is there a problem with the motor? Will this be an expensive thing to fix, what solutions do you suggest for me?

Thanks!!

are you doing it with the engine running,,,, i know but start with obvious..... next oil all of the joints just in case they are stiff and need freeing up.. after that it could be the motor on the way out... clean out the drain holes

Yeah doing it with engine running, if I wanted to oil the joints would that involve me dismantling the roof? as for the motor I think I'd prefer having a mechanic take a look at it because im a clumsy b*stard lol so I wouldn't want to make the problem even worse.

Say for arguments sake the motor was screwed (which I dont believe is the case), what would the cost be to replace it?

Could be the motor on its way out....about £1200 for a stealer to fix...but can be done diy if your any good with a spanner...still not cheap tho :(

It's a good idea to lube the pivot points of the hood frame each year as well as the locking mechanisms. I use Dupont Multipurpose Lube with Teflon but you can use a Lithium spray grease as shown in the video.
It's also a good idea to use a silicon spray on all the rubber moldings each year as shown.

Check out this video from Goss's Garage:

Think it's all been covered. Try the lube of joints as suggested as a first go at resolution. It does unfortunately sound as though its the first symptoms of the dreaded roof motor failure. :(

My roof got slower raising and lowering before the motor gave up. Indys seem to quote £600-£700 to replace a roof motor if I remember correctly. Fingers crossed you get it fixed and its not the dreaded motor.

Thank you all for the great help, I will take it to a trusted mechanic to check both - if its the motor or just needs some lube, I hope it only needs lubing because generally speaking the previous owner kept the car in immaculate condition so im going to be pretty peeved if I have to fork out around £1000 to get it fixed :/
