Z4 2003 e85 with carver dsp spdif question

I have the coax DSP carver system. Is it true that the coax only comes from the CD changer and the head unit uses normal wiring to the amp? I’ve heard this coax interface is SPDIF and Conversion is 16 bit 48kHz. Can I just buy an analog-to-spdif adapter? I found some that are only $15. If this will work, can I use a bluetooth to spdif adapter? These are about $20-$30.

If I buy one of these bluetooth-to-digital units and use the CD changer coax, do I have to wire anything to have the head unit recognize the CD player input. I don't have the CD player but my sales sticker says my Z4 is prewired for one.

If you are go8ng to use a BT adapter you might as well just add an aux port. Will cost about $20 and will work for sure.

srhutch, what's your experience? My IPhone goes digital to analog if I use the 3.5mm output. I was thinking going IPhone digital to IPhone analog and then analog back to DSP(SPDIF) might degrade the audio some. Seems if I could go bluetooth(digital) to DSP(digital SPDIF) direct I might get a better quality of sound. I have the Carver DSP and I notice a huge difference between the radio and a CD. Do you have DSP and do you get the same sound quality out of Aux?

Also from what I'm reading it seems like I can't go the Aux route without an analog-to-digital (DSP) converter. Grom is selling these for $67? All their stuff like bluetooth seems like it goes to analog and then to digital thru their DSP adapter. I was considering this route but it occured to me that bluetooth is actually a digital wireless interface so if I could go direct from bluetooth to DSP I might get better performance.

What has been your experience? Is the Aux as good as the CD?

I only use an iPod through an intravee, but there are probably hundreds of folk on here using aux with iPhones.

The aux connection is directly connected to the head unit, and all head units are the same so there wouldn’t be an issue.

I see on some forums that if you have the lear carver amp and it has the coax, that you need a dsp adapter. What’s your experience with this? Also all head units are the same? If i can use dsp or not, do i loose any performance if i don’t use dsp?

It's not as simple as using a coaxial to aux connection, as the cd changer will only output sound when instructed to by the head unit. This means the amp won't switch to that input until the head unit system tells it to, knowing there is a cd changer available.

You can replace the CD changer with a Grom Bluetooth unit which emulates the cd changer, but you'll also need the DSP adaptor

Wouldn't activating the cd changer input be as easy as activating the aux or tape input?
So with the 5cent capacitor/resistor network?

Usually the most difficult thing with systems like these is getting the impedance of the various components right/matching to get a decent amplitude across.
