Z4 2003-2008 TIRE AND WHEEL UPSIZE HELP

Hello Folks,

I am trying to navigate around up-sizing my wheels and tires. I would like to go with widest tire possible without it hanging outside the fender. As for diameter of the rim I'm thinking 18".

I would appreciate hearing tips and pointers from those who made this modification. Specifically, did you go with a different offset and spacers? Di you opt for a staggered setup?

Thanks! :)

I would not play with offset or consider spacers, we're talking about a high precision car here, not a tuner Jap car.

Staggered; 8.5 front and 9.5 rear. If you want to go as wide as possible, opt for 19'' with 235/35R19 front and 265/30R19 rear. That's what I've got on mine (Alpina Roadster-S OEM sizing)

On both my previous 2003 and 2006 roadsters I always ran 235/40-18 front and 265/35-18 rear.
That was a good combination that work well on the stock sized rims.

Interesting,
When I just had my Michelin PSS tires fitted, I wanted to go up to the 265/35-18 rear (currently 255/35-18 rear). The tire fitter spoke with the Michelin rep, who advised against it - concerns about the different tire width messing with the DTC, causing to to come on (or off, as the case may be). They felt it would be OK on a 2004 or previous, but were concerned with 2005+. Anyone ever see this?

Hmm interesting, can you tell me what tire and rim types you went with? I've got the 2.5 so standard size front and back is 225-45-17. So no problems with rubbing or bottoming out? Is there any reason the 2.5 wouldn't work with a staggered set?

Thanks again for the info!

To whom are you asking this question?

WONDERZ, yes you can run a staggered setup on the 2.5.

Thanks, I was assuming there was something different about the 2.5 as everywhere I looked on line for wheel and tire combos showed must narrower tire options. Punch in 3.0 and voila!

The 17"s you currently have were not standard on the 2.5 it came with 16" wheels ( can't remeber the style.
I currently have a staggered set up on my 2.5 8.5J x 19 on the front and 9.5J x 19 on the rear can't remember the offset off the top of my head but if you search out VMR V710 it should bring up something Aquazi has the same wheels with a slightly different front offset.
There is also a wheel gallery thread which will show what people currently have fitted both OEM and aftermarket, I think most will also include the offset info etc.

WONDERZ, if you go to...
http://www.tirerack.com/ (Tire Rack)
...and shop for either tires or wheels and input your year, make and model you will get a very complete selection of all options and sizes that Tirerack will guarantee that they will fit. Even if you don't purchase from Tirerack you can get a good idea of what rims sizes and offsets as well as tire sizes are recommended.

I run Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics on Alpina Dynamics, 19'' setup.
How do you find the F1's I had a set on my 645 and they were loud!

You found the Asymmetrics loud? It's actually one of their high scoring features, when comparing them with same category of tyre from competitors. I find that the noise generated is very reasonable, considering a pair of 265 footprints are running right behind my butt.

To expand on this slightly, when you upsize on your rims to 19" for instance. with a 8.5J Front and 9.5J rear.

What pressures should you be putting in them?

Since the sticker on the door does not mention 19" rims and 2.7bar Rear + 2.3bar Front seems rather excessive.

Great question! I had the same problem with my 645. Went with what the goodyear man told me. Maybe thats why they made so much damn noise!

Thanks WLH and powerontap, I think I'll head on over and try it.

Well...No I'm even more confused, not a single combination includes a rear tire in a staggered setup larger than a 245 on the rear, which is where I started this thread.

This wet-up seems to work on a Z4 2.5i for example:

19" 8,5J in the front and 9,5J in the rear
