Hi all

I have recently got a 2.2i SE and am now looking to modify the engine to get abit more HP out of it?
Has any already done this and know of the cheapest way to go about doing it?

Cheers in Advance.

Swap your pannel filter for a K&N filter... I got 3bhp on the dyno. Cost me around £11. Other people have done this too.

You can try an ECU remap. However on naturally aspirated engines the improvements are not big. I was quoted a 9 Bhp and 15 Nm improvement for a 2.0i and at a cost of ~ 300 euro. They also stated a 10-20% fuel improvement depending on the vehicle but they did not have exact figures for the zed. For the 2.2 the improvements should be a bit higher. Also a K&N filter. Brad pritt did both mods on a 2.2i and his car went to 185 bhp from 170:

fitting turbo is never easy or cheap. specially on n/a engine.

turbo kits arn't made for the Z4, but you can buy some superchargers,

in my opinion ESS makes the best, but isn't cheap. there are more kits like the Active Autowerke, G power, Mosselan but most only have a kit for the 3.0 so you should have to adjust some things for you car, as ESS has the tune already. :)

othe possiblity is that you make a turbo kit yourself. but i think it's gonna cost you more than a off the shelf kit.

Superchargers Turbos they are big money i think about it some times. I then slap myself around the face. As you could sell you car and use the turbo money to buy a nice ///M. And you would have a better car for the same cash.

You would be better off spending any cash on suspension brakes. The biggest thing that stops cars be fast................... Driver talent. I know my car has more performance than i do skill. So a bit of driver training.

Panel filters exhaust remaps. All probably worth doing. Its going to make the car sound nicer

in the UK it is, in holland it's cheaper to buy an ESS kit. but the price is to damn high, i'll have to pay around 5200 euro's to get the TS1 and around 7000 for the TS2.

but as i didn't win the lottery that stil has to wait ;) :P

Really even after you budget for better brakes suspension a limited slip diff to use the power properly. And then insurance? I am amazed!!

Frankly there's not much you can do that is cost effective to get more power out of a Z4. The exhaust and air intake system are already good. I have a K&N and it's a waste of time. No better than a clean paper filter and needs servicing.

The bottom line is it's cheaper to buy a 2.5 or 3.0 than any mods. especially when you add in premiums of modding Vs standard. N ot that this helps you.

The only time I have seen it being effective to modify is in countries where taxation and duties make it near impossible to afford the large engined cars.

As an aside if you want more performance swap the diff. You can get great acceleration at the cost of fuel economy and top end.

Sorry for being so negative. If its a project and the fun of building it. Great idea. I would love a v8 -10 in a zed. Maybe one day?

You can remove weight. Lighter wheels, lightweight battery, never fill up the tank properly, drain washer fluid to minimum, remove AC, remove roof and replace with tonneau, remove interior trim, speakers/radio, put your GF/wife on a diet or get rid of her (if you do that you can remove the passenger seat as well and then fill the empty space with helium balloons) etc...

Was thinking about s50b32 swap as you can get everything for less than £2k ,end result would be 320 bhp . Not 100% sure but i thing m54 has the same mounting points as s50 . Only issue it's lsd ,but i guess you can always weld the old diff :driving:

Cheer for all the input! Looks like I'm just going to have to concentrate on the exteriors and maybe do the ECU remap!
Would of loved to put the Supercharger in but just too much ££££

iff you're responding to me, i don't have a sper diff nor a BBK yet, but that's things i would prefer to do befor an Supercharger.
