I have a "used" genuine BMW started motor going free, its off my 2005 2.2, it hasn't failed completely I think twice it has decided not to work and has needed a tap with a 1/2 square extension 
I only changed it because the wife uses the car more than me and if it let her down while she was using it I would have got grief!
