I'd get it fixed Matt you should get the money back if not more also helps the sale of the car.

I would put buy one with a dodgy roof unless it was substantially cheaper than market value.

It's more likely to be a broken wire than a hall sensor. A hall sensor is a pita to replace so I would look at the wiring first.
