Z4 2.0 Limited Slip Diff

Hi I recently purchased a Z4 Sport 2.0 Litre uplift model late 2008 I had an oil change and service at a non franchised BMW garage the mechanic informed me the car had a limited slip diff and all is OK, this surprised me as I thought only the Z4 M series had limited slip diffs installed, I would appreciate if someone with the knowledge can enlighten me.

Wasn't standard fitment, or even an option, so if it's got an LSD it'll be an aftermarket one
 
TBH, I'm not sure how he'd notice while doing an oil change - on my car you can't tell by external examination that there's a Quaife LSD fitted
 
I would seriously ask him (your mechanic) how he came to this conclusion and depending on his answer you may want to reconsider using him in future

As it will be basically the same quaiffe/ mfactory or other diff as the 6 cylinders use i would have thought the same money. No cheaper for a 4 cylinder sorry!
 
A big thanks to everyone for your quick response, in future I will take it to a BMW non-franchised specialist with Z4 knowledge and after receiving the excellent information from you guys I doubt very much a limited slip diff is installed.

PS I live in Cirencester and enjoying my E85 ragtop Z4 to bits, wish I had got one earlier in life !!!!

To be fair any reputable non specialist should be fine for servicing and virtually all repairs etc, its when you get tricky faults you might need a specialist or for coding/programming new modules etc.
Just be sure and giving the guy the benefit of the doubt, he definitely said slip diff and not just diff? I don't know your car history but rear wheel drives usually have a separate diff from the gearbox, where as most front wheel drive cars have it integrated into the gearbox.
Just checking you didn't just misunderstand him before dispensing with his services.

He stated limited slip diff which I have to say confused me, however they didn't specialise in Z4`s so I think he assumed all Z4`s had lsd`s.

I'm going to book the car into a specialist Z4 BMW non franchised garage near Gloucester, my handbrake needs sorting out I will ask them if a lsd is installed.

all he needs to do is spin the wheels while the cars in the air... so its feasible that he may know what he's talking about.... however this method doesn't work for certain diffs, like Torsen type... i think.
 
I cant think of a reason he would have thought you had one from just being underneath, unless there is a quaiffe sticker etc on the diff casing, that might do it! But i have never seen a listing for a 4 cylinder BMW slip diff so it would be something special or a 6 cylinder diff grafted on.

All you can think is he thought they were standard on these.

Both wheels would spin with an open diff in the air. Its still possible to spin both wheels as long as the loads 50% both sides.
 
The best and most effective way to see how the diff works is to spin the wheels on a wet tarmac.
Based on my experience the difference is huge.
