Z4 2.0 Differential and mechatronics failure

Just thought i would let everyone know of a strange failure on my 2015 2.0 auto msport Z4.

Noticed a strange metallic noise from the rear of the car which only occurred at low speeds when decelerating. not particularly loud just annoying. So as the car is well in warranty and had only covered 1900 miles of to the dealer it was.

The dealer agreed that the noise was strange and so it was booked into the garage to see what was wrong.

Well it took 2 days before they concluded that it was the differential causing the noise. So another 2 days pass by when they call to say that the noise is gone (differential replaced) but when it was test drove the gearbox is now throwing fault codes. Another 2 days pass by and they let me know that the mechatronic unit is at fault and BMW have said it need replacing. The part is on back order so who knows when i will get my car back. Eventually i was supplied with a 330D as a replacement which is surprisingly fun to drive, a bit bigger than i need though.

Anybody else had any similar experiences? It seems unusual for such a new car to have such a major failure.

Well got the Zed back today.

Not massively impressed with the dealer's initial response to the problems. To start with no one bothered ringing me to let me know what was going on, my calls went unanswered and even when a return call was promised either no call or very slow. This carried on for two days until i lost my temper with one of the service team. At long last they now ring me up but still no offer of a replacement car until day 4 of the repair and only when i yet again made a fuss.

The repair has worked and now no noises from the zed that should not be there. must have cost BMW a fortune new differential, new mechatronics unit i would guess that they worked on the car for at least 3 straight days and on and off for 3 more, i dread to think what that would have cost without warranty?

I will give the car a good blast at the weekend to make sure all is well

Well the Zed is back at the garage again, another failed diff, 320d as a replacement, boy is this a dull car!

Is this just bad luck or is there an underlying problem??

Two failed diffs..?? Methinks not much was changed the first time around, maybe just a diff oil change etc, and fingers crossed.

Bad luck though, all hassle for yourself.

That is a surprising failure and sorry to hear. hope you get it sorted soon.
Then you can get back to :driving:

Sounds like misdiagnosis the first time. Two diffs break on a new car? Very unlikely, hope it gets sorted this time.

Nothing knocks the shine off a new car faster than things like this :(

Hope they sort it for you. In the mean time who are this disreputable bunch........?

Williams Bolton, on the surface they appear very good but you have to push at every turn to find out whats going on. After the first repair all was well for 100 miles then the whining from the diff started.

This time around i seem to be getting better responses but we will see hopefully i will find out more on Monday I will update then.

Thanks for all the replies and yes the shine has been removed from the car now, but i still love driving it .

Not surprising I'm sad to say with Williams, there's not too many main dealers out there who are much cop unfortunately but Williams really do make the p!ss poor look like superstars! They really do have a god awful reputation, I'm speaking from personal experience on this as our fleet department has had numerous company vehicles through there for repairs/service/warranty work. Its not just limited to Bolton, Manchester are just as bad, particularly their bodyshop who are an extremely unpleasant and arrogant bunch of w@nkers! We will no longer do busy with them their that bad and our company drivers are specifically told to not use them under any circumstance.

Hope it all works out but if it doesn't take it to a different franchise as warranties are valid at any BMW Dealership. Hopefully another place will be better and I can say from experience at work that the other Northwest dealer franchises have their faults, but are in a completely different league to Williams
