I have a 2007 Z4 2.0 which has shown the emissions warning light several times. There has been a gap of about 6 months between this the last warning message and my local garage could find no fault either time and reset the error code. He suggested that there may have been a software change on the vehicle as its possible the emissions parameters are set too finely. My local BMW dealers know nothing about this and suggest a full diagnostic test which they say will be more sophisticated than that out my local garage.

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

If it were mine and there wasn't any obvious reason or problem driving the car, I would sit back, relax and wait for the problem to leave the land of the intermittent fault and enter the land of the permanent. Make sure your roadside recovery is up to date, and start saving some pennies to give to Mr BMW.
 
what kind of fuel are you using? i had this problem with cheap petrol..I switched to shell and stuck in some redex and the problem has disappeared. :D
 
I had an exhaust emissions lights show on, got it cancelled left it a while and it came back on.

Tried two garages and they were clueless. Told me to have the lamda sensors changed which monitor the exhaust emissions as they are where the fault is first recorded.

Took my car to lee at LB automotive (ex head technician at BMW) He picked it up straight away. I don't know the precise mechanics but basically an inlet pipe to the of the engine banks had split, causing incorrect fuel/air mixture and the engine management system to over compensate. The system eventually gives up and tells you by showing the emissions light. A common fault apparently.

Cheap part and straight forward part to replace so didn't cost much and no problems since :-)

When I had my 2.0 it spent most of its short life in the garages, replaced all sensors, welded the exhaust manifold, a week in the main dealers, all was fruitless with the emmisions light on and always going into limp mode, best thing I ever did was get shut of it and replace with the 3.0, totally different car altogether....
 
I get this with my 2.0, to date I've had the light three times in 18 months. I talked to a friendly garage about it and they told me that the sensors were overly sensitive to fuel variations, to get a code reader and just cancel it each time which is what I did.
I've noticed that it only happens when I have used 'supermarket brew' as opposed to the usual diet of Shell/BP, so I simply don't worry about it otherwise I'd spend all my nights feverishly trawling the internet looking for a 'cure' like Andysat :thumbsup: when I should be catching up on my beauty sleep.
Really happy with my l'ol four pot, does all I need and more and I only fill up every two weeks...sorted! :driving:

I've had the light come on a few times, not recently I might add. Car always runs fine, returns 42-44 mpg, doesn't miss a beat, passed the MOT a couple of weeks ago with an excellent emissions report so I won't worry about it. I have a D900 code reader so I'll just delete if it comes on again. :wink:
I've come to the conclusion that the 'emissions' light is overly sensitive. :evil:

Hi mate- it flickered a few weeks ago (think i mentioned it on here) took to indy it
turned out to be a faulty coil pack :roll:
