Z3 classic???

Hey Guys

I was just thinking about getting a cheap Z3 as an investment for the future as they are coming to 20 years since release I think…… they will become more rare as more people either scrap or write them off. I know the M version can be crazy expensive already.

So should I get one for £1300 and tidy it up and hold on to it for a few years and sell it on to a collector or am I just wasting my time???

Mind you I can remember wanting one when I saw Goldeneye all those years ago when I was 7.

As always I welcome the views of everyone.
 
Your going to need to find a mint one i expect and probably need to keep it a very long time! You would probably be better of finding yourself a decent E36 M3 Evo :thumbsup:

Also wasn't it a Z8 in the Bond film that got cut in half, or am i thinking of something else?
 
They had a blue Z3 in Goldeneye towards the end of the film.

Wasn't on screen very long.

The Z8 was in The World Is Not Enough.
 
Well if you wait long enough, everything becomes a 'classic' just by virtue of having survived and having rarity value. Even Allegro's and Marina's have minor classic status these days... The Z3 styling is aging quite well, as it didn't diverge from what people perceive to be classic roadster styling, but in reality it wasn't the best roadster out there when new and got trounced in most contemporary road tests by the MX5 from a handling point of view....

This is the bit I'm focussed on. If it's to enjoy the car as a project, tidy it up drive it, use it, etc. then why not. It's be a cheap possible classic and you'll not lose on it

If it's to spend to restore then garage to sell for a profit, then a waste of time and money in the sector you're talking about and the length you'd have to wait.
 
A classic car doesn't always mean an expensive car and in some ways I think the Z3 is already a modern classic. I'm not sure if buying a cheap one would be worth it though. Only the best with low mileage would be worth getting if you want to sell to a collector but if you bought a nice example there's no reason why it wouldn't go up a few quid. A late model, wide body with a three litre engine is probably the most desirable but they are going to cost more than 1300 quid. How long were you thinking of keeping it for?
 
The versions that will become future classics, with some already commanding attractive amounts are the Z3MC and Z3MR. Especially those fitted with the S54 engine out of the E46 M3, mainly because of their rarity. Only around 73 RHD MR's were accounted for the last time I checked.
 
Definitely think the Z3 has aged amazingly well and looks better with each passing year. Has a real old school roadster look to it. Even the way the bonnet raises feels classic as it lifts from the front and around mid section of the cars front end.

There are a few about. If it were me I'd try and find a larger engined (2.8/3.0) facelift version (post 2000) on mid-miles, then fettle.

Regarding M's I've noticed recently that even the MRs are increasing in value quote dramatically. If you're going to get on the bus, get on soon!

On a side note, the S50 Z3Ms are pretty rare too btw! e36 M3 Evo engines. What they lack in traction control they gain in raw experience and originality.
 
I think there was a chap selling a Z3 on the forum, last week was it??? anyway I think he wanted about £1,500 for it, & I thought I should buy this...it's grand - but I didn't :(
