Z2 to replace Z4?

I wonder how the sales of the Jaguar F Type will fair? I live very close to a Jaguar dealership and I haven't seen any on the road so far except for the 2 dealer demo cars.

i thought they were sold out for 12 months - but when i enquired recently the dealership had some on order that were available.

You are right breaker big difference between an LR 4x4 system and X-drive, quattro etc . terrain response is awesome but tyre selection is a big factor - alot of 4x4 audis are still on low profile sports tyres.

the downside of a 4x4 in snow is the weight , they take some stopping.

Have to say from my experience - Quattro has helped in snow & ice conditions. I had a TT for a while which is. The variable Haldex system.

I'm sure it's not as good as a 4x4 on terrain tyres, but it was certainly better on snow/ice than other 2 wheel drive cars I've owned!

Saying all that, winter tyres can make a big difference to 2 wheel drive cars in icy/snow conditions.

I hope so: this'll be my first winter with the Z4 & I'm going on a uk tour for work!

Will be hunting around for winter tyres come the autumn. Any suggestions of good places/deals welcome!

Keeping it aimed at mass market will make the Z2 a more attractive development than another Z4 evolution.

Rear wheel drive is a must IMO, but I can understand why FWD would be an option.

I think as long they have a big engined model at the top end of the range it'll be great

I don't think Roadster sales declines are much to do with models like the Evoque. That is an effect not a cause. It's more to do with people not being able to afford the luxury of a weekend garage queen in these austere times (many of these Z4's are - just look at us lot as a representative example).

Hence why it is cyclical. When the economy picks up so will Roadster sales. It would be a bit foolish to stop making Roadsters now, just as the world economy is showing signs of doing more than just flat-lining. Perhaps a replacement model will be delayed a year or two until a clearer economic outlook emerges.

I agree og...I have only one car (the Golf is my wife's), and I use a Renault van for work all week...z only used at weekends/socialising midweek at times, but has hardly moved since the Lakes meet , as I have been away in Surrey, and at Goodwood, etc. but would prefer they kept a z4/z2 as rwd also :driving:

bought by a lot of enthusiasts because they are RWD and plans to move it to FWD are met with the same concerns as they would be here

Bought SECOND HAND by a lot of enthusiasts as a cheap, light, affordable, tuneable, easy to fix RWD car.

Bought new they are mainly bought by/for women and the majority are non enthusiasts who just want a wee soft top for posing in. They don't give a toss and most don't even understand RWD or know/care how many ponies are under the bonnet.

Rubbish! Are you basing this opinion on having seen a few MX5's driven by women? If you speak to some MX5 owners you'll find they are very enthusiastic (& actually have your opinion about Z4 drivers!)

As for fwd vs rwd - for the majority of owners it just doesn't matter since grip levels of modern cars are so high you won't get to see the difference. Yes, some owners will claim to be highway heroes who drive everywhere tail-out with the DCS turned off but in practice you need to be on a track to find the limits.

Lotus made the '90's Elan work spectacularly well with fwd - it can still show a clean pair of heels to most similarly powered roadsters.

If it is front wheel drive won't that mean a transverse front engine which would mean no straight six. Would be a big shame :(

A transverse straight 6 is possible - Volvo have done it. However, the Z2 isn't intended to replace the Z4, it's a junior model based on the new 1-series/Mini platform & is intended to compete against smaller (& cheaper) competitors. Therefore, a 6 cylinder isn't necessary, not when you have the ?28 turbo with 245bhp!

I used to have a Honda CRX & trust me, fwd can be fun! My brother had a Pug 309 GTI at the same time which replaced his 325 touring & he said it would rings around the 325. Don't knock it until you've tried it!

Not a fan of bmw styling what so ever, z4 only does it for me due to its long bonnet and lines it has... Rather have a mini midas...

I totally agree, the Z4 must remain and be improved on like the 911 over the decades and the Z2 should not be introduced to replace the Z4 even more so if it is to be front wheel drive as that is NOT a sports car is it :headbang:
Come on you overpaid BMW big dicks.....get a f***ing grip!!!!!! :x

The Z4 will never be another 911 not in a million years. Its now to fat . MX5 may well be though.

Widened and lowered so as to lose the "hairdressers car" tag....BMW cant win by the look of things

Would you say a Lambo was too fat?

What? the Z4 is 'to fat' (sic) ? Considering it's 100 - 200 kg lighter than a 911 (depending on which models you are comparing) that's hardly true.

The Z4 isn't a 'sports car' (not in the traditional definition). BMW refers to the Z4 as a 'roadster' which is a lot nearer the mark. The 911 hasn't been a 'sports car' since the 964, let alone the 996.

At the end of the day this is a marketing led fashion accessory, just like all the others of it's ilk. Yes it's fairly fast (fast enough to be beyond the skill levels of the majority of owners) but you would be surprised how easily a hot hatch would stay on your tail. Given the Z4's lack of compliance on anything rougher than a snooker table, it's more than likely it would struggle to keep up with any well sorted (fwd) hot hatch. Power is useless if the wheels aren't in contact with the road.

The next 1 series will be fwd & if BMW consider there's a good business case to a Z2 then they'll base it on that. If, as likely, it has less than 250 hp then it doesn't matter which end is driven as at that power level fwd can cope just fine.

Reality check for all wannabe Highway Heroes - for the vast majority of time you'll be pootling along at the same speeds as the rest of the traffic so stop pretending you drive everywhere at maximum attack. If you want to try & show the Stig how it's really done then just get a dedicated car for track days & be done with it.
