Your thoughts please .....

Im currently looking to buy a 56 plate coupe done 23k problem is its had 3 owners, it was a demo + 2, just wondered what peoples thoughts were on this ?

Would it put you off ?

my 04 roadster was a dealer demo + 3 owners (I think from memory).

It has been absolutely fine - anything that went wrong was sorted by the AUC warranty...

is the car you looking at through a dealer or private?

Number of owners is near the end of my list of requirements - especially in the current financial climate.

I'd be wary but wouldn't let it put me off if everything else about the car is great. Cars like these - more unusual/sporty cars - can frequently change hands more often than a "regular" car, so I wouldn't worry too much.

But on the other hand, it could be an indication the car is a duffer! Just make sure you thoroughly check it out as you would normally.

As long as you're intending keeping the car for a few years I wouldn't worry, but if you were to sell it on again within 12 months that would make it a <4 year-old car with 4 previous owners which again might put people off...

get and AA/rac mechanic to check it out then use the 3 owners as a bargaining tool

My car had 4 previous owners which made me weary initially, but using that to knock a bit more off the asking price I went for it and have so far had no problems at all.

Thanks for the input, the car is from a dealership its up for £20,000 with comfort package, bluetooth, heated seats, full leather and 108's milage 23,000.

My only worry was selling it on but like a11y says as long as i keep it for a while shouldnt be too bad

You could always ask the dealer if he can arrange for you to speak with the last owner ... worth a try to see what they say?
But it sounds good to me! :)

You are being absolutely raped!! I traded my 56 plate 19,000 mile Z4M Roadster two days ago for a 1 series 123D M-Sport advertised at £19,950. After 2 months of advertising on Pistonheads I could not sell my ///M. Hardly surprising with £405 Road Tax, 27mpg & the ridiculous servicing costs. I've just bought a 5 year/60,000 mile servicing plan from BMW for £660 - yet an Inspection 1 on the ///M would cost around £600!!

I am laughing all the way to the bank. I've got shut of a (albeit beatuiful) moneypit & cut my motoring costs to a quarter. - £120 Road Tax against £405, Much cheaper Insurance (£210 against £310) & 54 mpg against 27mpg.... And on British roads the 123D is as quick as the Z4M in real terms.

There are no buyers for the car you covet. A cash offer of £17,000 should buy it. If the dealer says no then walk away & I'm sure they will telephone you the next day.....

And with THREE owners!!! Run away if you want a decent eventual re-sale price when it is then a FOUR owner car. What planet do you guys live on? Would YOU buy a 3 year old Z4 that has had 4 owners? I think not!

i would say the owners isnt important. often people buy cars like this for the summer then sell them on after they have had some fun.

get a car thoroughly checked over, and make sure the dealer gives you warranty though

I'm quite surprised at the responses so far.

My Z4 Coupe had 1 previous owner when I bought it at 1.5 years old. That didn't put me off. If I sold it now, with 2 previous owners, at 2 years old, I still wouldn't expect people to be put off. Now, if he had said 5+ previous owners, I'd perhaps look into it a bit more, but as mmm-five has said, in the current climate, it's not exactly rare.

Regarding price; I don't feel it's a rip-off by any stretch, but it's not the best price out there. You most certainly would NOT be getting an M for that price. Bear in mind he wants the Coupe, which commands a premium over a roadster, regardless of what roadster owners will tell you.

As an example though Adam; my car (in my signature) went up for sale recently at £19,500, and I expected to get £19,000 for it. Mine is an August 07 car, so most likely almost a year newer than the one you're looking at buying.

I hope that goes some way to helping you Adam, but please feel free to ask any more questions. Everyone on here is very helpful.

Sounds over-priced to me!

I wouldnt be put off by the owners too much, oftern 1st owner keeps for 6 months, and probably most people change their car every year at this price range.

i had a quick look and found one on autotrader. with a bit of time and haggeling you'd be able to find it for around 20k... this one has satnav too....

Do you really think you can walk up to a private buyer and offer MORE than 10% off the price it's listed for and walk away with it? If someone had come and offered £18k for my car up at £19.5k, I'd have politely told them that I'm not interested... but be thinking "What a joker"!

But if you don't try you will never know. People have many reasons for selling a car and sometimes want quick cash. It's always worth trying a silly offer.

Of course, but the same theory applies for the car he has seen up for £20,000; which is £2.5k cheaper (but still not a brilliant deal; as I've said, mine was up for less, and is almost 1 year newer I assume)

Well ive ben looking for some time now and if you look on the BMW site you will see there £19,995 for an Si sport with decent milage etc he has knocked 1k off the price and to be honest i want more off it i need to get the cost of change down.

As for the M im not interested in the extra running costs etc i would love to be able to afford one and the costs that come with it but unfortunately i cant, you also cant get an M coupe for 20k from a dealer ........

Appreciate the thoughts of everyone its kind of split on the owner thing hmmm.......
