Another B21 shaped hole I dug myself into.

I fitted a Wagner Evo 1 FMIC to replace the stock FMIC on my 20i when I remapped it past 300bhp.

It turns out that the 18i/20i/28i FMIC is the same as the 35i/35is FMIC.

Prior to selling the car I re-installed the OE FMIC and transfered the Wagner Evo 1 FMIC to the 35is..all well and with that went onto record 400 bhp on my trusty dyno.

Fast forward on to the uprated TTE500 turbo upgrade plan..whih called for uprated inlet /outlet plumbing from 1.75" to 2"

Sudden dawning that both the relative sizing and the type of connectors was going to be a problem.

The OE connectors to the OE FMIC are push in and circlip..the aftermarket turbos, the outlet pipes and charge pipes are all push over with hose clamps.

I therefore was left with an imponderable when we came to fit said plumbing..how and if I could connect the Evo1 with OE style connectors to the new larger 2" slip over plumbing and uprated VTT turbo outlet pipes and new VSRF charge pipe.

Given that I'm using a local garage's 4 post lift and helper I didn't want to get stuck with an issue that either couldn't be resolved or would take time.

The issue is the dissimilar sizes of the external diameter of the Evo 1 FMIC and the plumbing around it..about 12-15 mm difference and the need also for flexible couplings and high temperature (greater than 150c) and high pressures (more than 2 bar) required.

In the end I just opened up the wallet and bought an Evo 2 which is designed for the job..so all plumbing lines up, they supply the correct hoses and voila..problem solved..

There is a small performance advantage of the Evo 2 as a tube and fin construction vs the Evo 1 which bar and plate.

First world problems..

Pictures show relevant story and stock 35i FMIC for comparison.

While i do enjoy your posts, I have some observations id like to share:

1 your wallet is very large and doesn't appear to have a wife guarding that - well done you
2 You have lots of spare time - i am very envious
3 you appear to have either:
A a sadistic streak inflicting all of this work on your self
B some degree of lunacy going on inside

I think 400 and up bhp on such a small car would scare the bejesus out of me...Im thinking the answer to number 3 is Lunacy :)

Look forward to see ing the outcome...

Observation 4 - should have kept the 4-pot. All that power AND balance. :poke:

So..

Yes
Yes

Ref 3.. I like some level of challenge, technical complexity and variety…that’s what my management psychologist said in a previous life..

I’ve found a progressive weaning on BHP helps..

On bikes I started at 4.5 BHP and finished at 140 BHP ..

On cars I started at 26 BHP ..started on E89s at 184 BHP currently at 400 BHP looking for 550 BHP next (all crankshaft figures) :tumbleweed:  :driving:

‘Specialist’

Does that qualify as humble brag ?

:fuelfire:

It's a reference to a show over here called Mastermind, you have a specialist subject or your choice and then general knowledge questions both over a set time for 4 contestants per show.....I don't advise yanks to bother applying...unless your specialist subject is 'Embarrasment'....:poke: :poke:

Our small fishing village royals are even more embarrassing than yours.

Now back to our programme already in progress. The specialist is waiting.

After doing the data logging and looking at the likely impact of IAT and size of intercooler I asked Wagner if I had could have one of their really bad boys..the Evo 3 competition version..

There’s only less than £200 difference between the Evo 2 and Evo3…so I asked Wagner UK if I could part-ex the two for the difference and they said yes!

So the big boy arrived today and as they say size does matter..

Given in the UK we don’t run ethanol mixes with their cooling attributes keeping the inlet air cool should reap bigger benefits..

Also the flow rate is much much better..

Downsides…

A bigger, heavier lump right on the nose..

Theoretically some delay due to a larger chamber to get charged…not sure on this one..

Onwards..Warp Factor 6 Mr Zulu! :tumbleweed:  :driving:
