Young Zed drivers...

when i had just gotten my z4.. a month after 23.. everyone thought i was dealing drugs. it was funny. i just tell them im paying for it with my own money (i actually am!). the thing is though.. i let people run their imaginations.

either way.. it's a win-win situation. if your parents bought it for you.. you're lucky and well taken care of. they love you that much! and.. if you can afford to pay for one out of your own pocket.. then hey.. congrats!!

so yea.. in the end.. we all win. however you wanna look at it!

Its funny when you say that people think you deal with drugs, because I actually do - but the legal kind of course... :P

to be quite honest, a lot of that stuff is around me. so when people comment.. i smile inside. heh

A guy that works for me (he is 30 and I am 26) I think hates me and resents me because I have a Z4 and he has a 12 year old fiesta.

It did bother me, but not anymore its his problem not mine :D :D

I wouldnt worry about it...its just jealousy.....I'm 21 (and again, probably look younger...lol) and have a Z4 3.0i which I saved up for ages to buy and although its annoying when people make snide comments...you just have to learn to live with it and not let it get to you (as I did once...which nearly ended in an accident).

Just some older guys in a golf gti (180bhp I think) who spotted me at the petrol station with my mate (who is also the same age)....they started making comments about the car and and asked how long i'd had it etc. Then I heard one of them say to the other 'its probably his dads car' as they got back into there car...which annoyed me. When we both pulled back out onto the main road, they started driving quite aggressively and cut me up at the next set of traffic lights (which annoyed me even more!)...up to this point, I didnt really want to give the car any, because a Z4 3.0 vs a Golf GTi, would have been quite embarrasing. However, unfortunately I let the testoterone filled male side of my brain take over and booted it passed them (smiling at them as I went pass) to create a bit of distance (which I did, quite rapidly). However, a bit further down this dual carriage (by which time the Golf had caught up), I needed to come off, so I indicated to go left but this guy wasnt having it (he was trying to match my speed to stop me from coming into the left lane). I sped up to try and shake him, but I didnt want to go too fast as I was running out of road before the junction. So I had no choice but to brake, very hard and go across the hatchings at the junction. The car behind me came about an inch from my bumper, not to mention I nearly hit the golf crossing over to the junction. Maybe if I hadnt shot of pass these two guys earlier, they wouldnt have been so persistant on stopping me from changing lanes.

I think you probably just showed you are a little too young for the Z4....

Nah....i'm not sure I showed that.....i think I'm more than capable (and old enough) to handle the car, having driven more powerful cars prior to having the Z4.....I think I perhaps went wrong by giving into them and trying to protect my 'male pride', which I now realise is never really worth it as it could end in points on your licence or even worse, an accident

Reading this thread is making me a bit nervous. Are the young Zed drivers really getting so much animosity? I'm 22 and I pick up my new 3.0Si Coupe in just over a week. The thing is that I look about 15 so I dred to think what sort of reception I am going to get! :o

Ahh well, screw the jealous

to keep the life story short, I work in road construction in Canada, make a ridiculous pay for my young and tendor 23 years of life, I found myself pretty much burning my money everyday of every week.

I split a brand new house with my brother and still couldnt help blowing my extra money. I decided to get an Z4M to filll that gap, Bmw was in no way interested in approving me, it eventually was a mafia type finance company who approved me and it helped that the bmw salesman held the car for me for a good month.

But as you folks have been flat out insulted verbally, for me its the unbelievably dirty looks I get from assholes that couldn't get their own lifes together enough to surround themselves with luxurys that they at some point couldn't help but want.

The best two compliments came from a young 350Z driver who was blown away at his first look at the Z4M, and a father of two children at a cruise night who walked away from my car saying, now that car right there was a real car.

I suppose it would be a good time to also tell you all, in augustishh someone threw a full can of masonary paint at my garage, if I had happened to forget to lock my garage that night, my car and my brothers 749 Duke was surely getting a new Rose Silk coloured paint job haha, 5 hours of power washing and 120$ garage door paint job later, it nearly seemed nothing had happened hahah

I haven't had a lick of jealousy yet. Or any other licks for that matter. I think this is kinda one of those cases where the bad sticks out more than the good. Remember too, these are people all around the world....so yeah there is more bad eggs worldwide. Hell I live in Vegas where a decent chunk of the people are rude but have yet to have one bad comment.

To PhilDZ4 - What if I only want to bed the ladies?

It's not just the young ... I'm sometimes subjected to the 'mid-life-crisis' comments ... just because I drove 'sensible' family cars and have now treated myself to a Zed ... the children are growing up and I can afford to treat myself (or, more accurately my wife can afford to treat me!!) :D :driving: :D

There's the rub - you can't win! When I was young and had nice cars, I was spoiled, irresponsible, possibly dealing drugs. Then, suddenly, it meant I was having a mid-life crisis. It's seems like the simpler explanation would be I like cars, but that can't be it! :driving:

Jealousy is all around, the first thing a friend said about the car when I got was that he called it a penis enlarger!

ok, I admit it, I have a tiny penis (my wife has to use a microscope to see it when we have sex)
I guess all the moaning is just a big hoax from her side then.
Oh my god I'm sooo compensating . . .

i get 2 types of looks on the street.

1. a cold staredown or the finger.

2. props, thumbs up, or a smile from the ladies.

never anything in-between. so end of day, it nets out to zero. but seriously dont let it sweat you. my menatlity, i bought the car for me. as hard it is to believe, i'm not here to impress anyone. in fact, most bimmer owners aren't too fond of the z4, you either love it or hate it. i personally love the lines of the car and thought it was the most original looking mass-produced sports car out on the market. i enjoy driving it everytime so i dont worry about what others have to say or think. and to the occasional comment "why'd you get the z4, could've gotten a s2k or ____", my only response is "i prefer not to live in a world of 'coulda".

Ha nice. On a side note, hearing these stories from all over, I think i'll stay in Vegas. No one bothers me. I think around here with all the 6 series, audi's, porsche's, lotus' etc running around mine just is kinda like meh.
Alot of people I work with tease me an say i'm compensating. I just tell them yeah when I was born in Louisiana I lost 20 lbs as a baby....when they circumcised me. :tumbleweed: Actually I usually tell them that it's not compensating if i'm not standing still long enough to pick up chicks with the car. People still think it's an expensive car, they don't realize my used Z4 runs as much as a decent new car...oh wait, I guess that does make it expensive huh?
