Hi, I am currently 19, 20 in february and am looking to purchase a covertible.

I have been looking at Audi A4, Bmw 3 Series and the Z4.

So far i have decided the z4 to be the most desireable and the car that i would like the most. I do how ever have to account for costs of running and maintaining. I will be buying one that must have full service history and will be looking to maintain this. I also have to remember the fact that insurance is going to be expensive, although quotes for me as of now have been over £1000 cheaper on the 2.5 apposed to the 2.0 and 2.2. Maybe some can shed some light on this ???

I am keen to know any drawbacks of the engines, any problems to look out for, and what up keep costs are really like ?

Many Thanks in advance.

welcome to the forum

there are a few younsters on here so your not alone, insurance is so bloomin expensive, your location seems to be a very big factor

plenty of reading on here will highlight problems, not that many though, for roadsters watch out for duff roof motors, another thing to watch out for is damaged springs

Yes insurance is the biggest obsticle, i have got around 2600 to be insured from the other day, so i feel that adding another years no claims ( touch wood) and being 20 rather than 19 may bring it down to a more reasonable fee.

hey and welcome to the forum :D

no idea why a 2.5 would be cheaper to insure than a 2.0 or 2.2 :?

Insurance is such a mine field :(

you kids have too much money nowadays...

I hate spending anything over £1000 on insurance. Because of this, when I was 19, I was driving a clapped out renault clio 1.2 Biarritz. On the plus side, it had a stereo that could set off car alarms  and a superman logo on the bonnet

I'm not a chav, honest...

I hate spending anything on insurance but i figure i may as well enjoy having a nice car while i have no other worries and therefore will be willing to pay a small fortune to insure the car :)
I think it will be worth it to have the luxury of driving such a car at a young age 8)

Nothing wrong with a 1.2 clio, that was my 1st car :)

ok well good luck in your search. If your looking at cars around £10k, try to get one that has already had it's Inspection II service as this can be quite expensive. Done at 48000 miles i think.

I bought my car just before this is due, so I need to get this done :headbang:

Welcome along

Strange about the insurance on a 2.5 being significantly cheaper - guess that makes the decision over which Z4 engine to get easier lol. Anything's better than the 1.2 54bhp Punto I had until I was 24...

Welcome to the forum young 'un

I bought my Z4 when I was 20 a little under 2 years ago. Try getting an insurance quote with one or both of your parents as a named driver. Mine dropped significantly when I added my Dad on :)

I think I heard they are making it illegal to use your parents insurance nowadays :o

dont think she meant that - adding a parent as a named driver to your policy can't be illegal surely?

*ah, just read Lucy's post saying the same thing. Will leave this here though just to reiterate the point*

Try adding your mum or dad as a second driver (NOT as the main driver as this can lead to void insurance claims). Assuming they have not had any crashes or points in the last 5 or so years it can result in reducing your insurance price. Mine went from £1400 to £1050 by just adding my mum as a second named driver. Why that is I don't have the foggiest.

Whether this depends on which insurance company you use or not i don't know, but it worked for mine.
