You have to admire the French for something ...

At least they seem to show pride in their origins, banning the veils in public is a great step in the right direction. Can't see that happen in the UK though :(

Don't think its about their origins TBH; its just that, since la revolution, they are a secular state, so despite being a mainly RC country, religion allegedly belongs only in church - but then they claim to be classless too - pah, I say!

what is your reasoning for this? why do you think it's a good idea and in the right direction?

Personally I have to say I agree with the idea but its not about religion - its about security and womens rights. There are plenty of ways to express your religion if you are a muslim without hiding your identity.

And I think any country has the right to prevent its own culture from being diluted or changed - and thats NOT about immigration but about conforming. Theres no such thing as a free lunch.

Yes - my direction was from what lacroupade was saying. By hiding yourself it puts a distance between yourself and the rest of the community. Seperation within countries / communities is not a good thing, and the French are addressing that issue by disallowing that in public places.

Agreed, but these days you're only allowed to think that. Otherwise you'll be branded.

What do I care, I'm half Welsh and live part-time in the arse end of Carmathenshire and when I roll home in the Zed instead of the 4x4 they think I'm foreign LMAO!

Usually in the sticks in that neck of the woods you're known by your house name - I get called "The House With The BMW Outside"

X2 The PC police will not allow it on this side of the Pond.

If I walked into any commercial establishment like a convenience store or a bank wearing a mask or veil to hide my identity I would immediately be accosted, beaten or possibly shot (or at least Tasered) by an overzealous security guard or cop. why? Because I am a male and in our society it is not considered normal to hide ones identity. I live in "Our" society, the so called Western World and If a person wants to live in our society then that person should abide by the norms of said society, at least in my opinion anyway. BUT, If I am a woman wearing a mask or veil or burka I am welcomed with open arms.....WTF.?

I applaud the French for their actions, I'm not a big fan of anything else French but that I applaud.

+1

i agree with lacroupade (maybe because i am also half welsh and like a little lamb ha :tumbleweed:), i think from a security and social point of view it has to be done.

i was filling up in the local garage not long ago and the woman behind the desk asked a guy with a motorbike helmet on to take it off because the security cameras couldnt see his entire face and refused to serve him until he did so. needless to say there would be uproar if someone with a veil was in the same situation.

for me its not about religion or where you come from or whatever, dont give a sh!t what peoples beliefs are. i just think that if people want to live in this country they should adapt to our way of living. if they dont like it why did they come in the first place.

This reminds me of the Australian PM's speech back in 2008...

'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'

'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'

'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.'

'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom,

'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'

Note: I'm just quoting here, I have not decided on if I agree with the Veil issue or not yet

What the French say...

In its report, the committee said requiring women to cover their faces was against the French republican principles of secularism and equality.
"The wearing of the full veil is a challenge to our republic.
This is unacceptable. We must condemn this excess,"

Religion is a poor excuse for some behaviour.

The French have it right, keep it in your own privacy or place of worship.

Just because X amount of people believe and act under the same 'religion' it is ok to act in whatever way may suit that religion.

If tomorrow I began my religion that said I could wear a mask everywhere, and carry my 12inch ceremonial machette in public, and it be against my religion to have handcuffs applied, would it be acceptable? No.

What difference does it make how many people have been brainwashed from birth, with whatever nonsense or faith based belief they have?

When elements of someones faith/belief goes against what is best for society as a whole, then it has no place.

I'm sure 90% of those that wear these outfits would be happy to show their face if needed (ie, petrol station example), but it's the 10% who won't and then complain and bitch that need a good slap :)
If you don't like it, then change your religion, or sod off. You can't help your race, colour or creed, but you CAN help what nonsense you may believe in, and if you are a tolerant person, accept that everyone has to be kept happy, NOT just you, and so you should do your bit to work together!

Gah. I'm all for anti-racism and equality in that regard (where it can be applied without being racist in itself), BUT, religion really boils my piss when it's used as an excuse to be a s**t!
