Yikes !

got a wee bit of a fright the other day - on route to the tartan tarmac curry night came off the M8 and was making the tur right to head for the clydeside expressway just under the kingston bridge approach. Nisan leaf pulls up beside me. Lights changed to green and he went for it. I can tell you he was well in the lead till about 50 odd. got a thumbs up from me - these are pretty quick off the mark cars.... ;-)

Now i hadn't 100% discounted the 2.3i as a option for my next Z but gotta say that has not bigged it up for me one bit

So that's a no then  to be fair the leaf is electric and these wee things have a bit of oomph from a standing start........not sure how long the car would go for doing that at every set of lights!

I'd be more upset if I had to drive the Nissan Leaf ! Even if it is slower I will stick my Z4 and get humiliated at every set of lights....

He can gloat all he likes in the leaf.. You'll pass him down the road when he's recharging for the next 8 hours...

leaf best recorded from a production car 0-60 8.7s at 100% charge, at 25% charge 10.2s.... E89 23i came up with 6.5s Yes it should be quicker off the mark but something ain't right with that 'race'

A quick Google is Nissan Leaf 0-60 at circa 10 seconds.

It's likely torque that got the head start off the line.

Leccy cars are always quick off the mark not needing a gearbox helps with that and you only have to be a little bit slow off the clutch and he can put up a fight, if you were expecting a race (which I'm guessing that you weren't) you're going to leave him for dead.....

Now if he was driving a tesla that's pretty much guaranteed to be embarrassing any ice (yes even an ///M) away from the traffic lights

Had a go in a BMW i3 a while ago and was blown away by how quick it was up to 40/50 mph, much quicker than Joe public faffing about in first and second gear, made even more noticeable by the fact that your sitting at the lights with no sound and no engine running.

They are quicker than an older R35 GTR nevermind a ///M of any variant. They are stupidly quick at 3.1 seconds and you can even make it quicker (2.6 seconds) as an optional extra (P90D) on the tesla. Why you need to is beyond me

Yeah ludicrous is definitely the right word..

Ill say that I wasnt expecting him to make a go for it so was caught off guard. however I was coming off at the next junction so was a little unsure about making a dash to pass then pull in. Anyways it was making me think and I had a wee chat and went up against a fully charged Leaf with both of us going for it and yes the Z did a good job there and saw it off, however when repeating the caught sleeping approach it was quite a hard effort to make up for that initial start. but it did at around 45 50.

still recharge time sucks and not too keen on not being able to drop the roof.

Its often less about the cars performance and more about reaction times, as the OP has admitted, one seconds hesitation or even half a second caught off guard, and its quite easy to get embarrassed off the lights by punchy little city cars.

The beauty of electric motors, instant maximum torque :D

...... I was watching a video at the weekend about the lightning bike that won pikes peak, amazing

I took a Leaf on a 4 day extended test drive last year.
Very comfortable drive and as the OP found out, the 0-30mph acceleration can be surprising with the added bonus of full performance used with no need to wait for an engine to warm up.

I couldn't get past the ugliness of the car to buy one at the time but on a practical level it would have suited my daily commute perfectly especially as I could use free charging where I park at work. Could be worth a look as a second car though which I am considering, used examples are going for around £7500.

I'm in the process of looking for a 2017 Volt to replace my 2013 Ford C-Max Energi daily driver. I was reading a review, [Car and Driver, I think] and it stated that from 0-30 the Volt would outrun a Tesla S or a C6 Corvette, but after that, watch out. Interesting, because two years ago my garage contained two C6 Corvettes. It now houses a Z4 35i and a SLK55.
