I'm a newbie, having joined the forum a few days ago, and you all seem to have got me hooked. There should be a warning on this site about that.....

Anyway, somehow I got interested in E85 in the past week. But just to check I wasn't making a mistake, and since there aren't any E85 3.0Si SEs around nearby (my preferred spec), I went and test drove two E89s today, and really loved a 23i SDrive Auto - which was a surprise because I thought I wanted a manual (and it was wrongly listed as manual on Autotrader, which led to the unintended testing of an auto..). I'm 49, which might explain the shift away from stick...

So now I've gone ahead and reserved this one at Stratstone. It seems to be priced at about £2,300 above book value, which doesn't seem bad given it's BMW Approved, and also has some good spec - although I'm not sure about split-rim wheels, which might be a potential future problem?:

Hi David, the car looks nice but are you sure that's the right model? I would be wanting to try the 3litre version (although these are relatively rare) and also the 2litre turbo versions for comparison purposes :?
Whereabouts are you based?

Thanks Rob. I tried the 2-litre (manual) before this, but not the 3. The 23i 2.5 seems meaty enough for me, and it is a bit cheaper of course - which is quite important since this one's going to be difficult enough to sell to my wife...

Very nice. :thumbsup: Still not old enough for an auto here, but if you must have one then you picked a fine one. Welcome aboard. :)
 
Nice motor & very decent spec , , if those BBS rims haven't yet been apart & refreshed in 7 years then be ready to spend on those or swap for some other style perhaps ?
E89 23i with autobox isn't likely to melt the tarmac but in all honesty the 89s are not about that :o
 
That's a nice looking car :thumbsup: I bought a manual 23i last May and although I loved owning it and it was quick when worked hard, it is down a lot on power compared to the 3.0i and this niggled me. I held out 5 months before caving and part ex'd it for a 3.0i auto :D The sports auto is a cracking gearbox and wasn't my first choice but was sold once I tried it so good choice. My only advice is to be sure about the 2.5 engine as the 3.0i devil will keep sitting on your shoulder :thumbsup:

Car is priced at £12,893 .... does this look about right?

You could ask but id be amazed if BMW will get involved taking these apart & doing them properly i :? ve had a set off a 2009 & whilst they looked ok they were blistering as you would expect from a split rim wheel on the roads for 7/8 years .
Likely costs would be between £250 / £450 to make them right so maybe ask for £300/£350 your way to take them as they are ?
 
Thanks - really helpful points, with the benefits of experience. I reckon I will need to tread the same path though before understanding it fully; my first roadster (in 1986) was a Spitfire 1500 with overdrive, then a lowly-powered Mk1 Golf GTi, and I've since also really enjoyed the occasional drive of 2.0 MX-5s, but an MX-5 wouldn't fit the bill nearly as well as this 23i which as well as mainly good-weather weekend use may see the odd 90-mile commute on sunny days.

But I rented a BoxsterS (981, PDK) last summer for 24 hours - great value with Europcar with unlimited mileage - and actually didn't come away feeling particularly smitten, and suspect that its astonishing capability somehow didn't work for me. Don't really know why that was, but it was!

I'm some years older than you but still have no desire to go auto, although it probably depends on what you use the car for - my Z4 is reserved special occasions!

I just got a2010 2.5 auto and it's plenty quick enough ... The auto box is good and mine has the flappy paddles too.
I Have those wheels to, they look ok, but i will upgrade when finances allow
All in all I can't fault it. Except for the lack of a cup holder, but that's another thread...

just had another look in the light of day... If I were you i'd look for one with an I drive. if you don't you will wish you had. and all though it can be retro fitted it will cost a few quid, so easier to get it from the start.
 
I've had a sDrive 23i auto for over a year and it's been a lovely car (got from Stratstone approved used for £15k) very similar to yours and it's quick enough for me. The alloys I had refurbished (all 4) recently for £350 as part of a detailing deal ...(normally £480 for 4) and where beautifully done (even the all bolts been refurbished) well I could always hunt down a 35is but missus won't be happy lol
 
Hi David, a couple of things to look for to try and knock the price down, calipers will definitely be rusty. They all do so hilight and you could get a reduction. If the discs are rusty or pitted possible get free replacement. The rears are the ones to go for as the electronic handbrake is a bugger for diy. Sooty or discoloured exhaust tips. Easy replacement as push on but at extra cost. I love my 23i be aware 30 mpg should be expected on all short journeys.
 
Great advice - thanks very much folks. I've be also looked at this private 30i MSport auto one (given your advice), which is close, and am hoping for some detail on service history. It's YH60HXG with 67k miles, asking £11.7k. Mot due in a month, but vendor will sort this apparently. Not sure how it compares with the 27k miles 23i auto from Stratstone for just a grand more...?
