Yet Another Roof Problem

After working as normal this morning the roof now fails to open and close properly.

It's not completely dead; I can hear the motor operating and occasionally it does open and close fully, but it's slower than normal and it gets stuck. When it closes it slams back into place like there's not enough pressure in the system.

I've checked that the Bowden cable is in the right position and it is. When I pull the cable all the way out the motor does nothing as expected, but there's not much difference when it's all the way back in the slot.

This may be a red herring but I filled the boot to the brim with stuff at lunchtime and it was right after emptying it again that I first noticed problems.

I'm based in Sydney Australia so not sure whether another enthusiast can help me and my only option is a very expensive repair!

Ideas?

Many thanks,
David

If the motor is spinning fine and if the roof drops onto the windscreen rather then lowering under control, your bypass valve probably isn't seating properly. I'm in the same boat and haven't resolved it yet.

I found another post from a user with a problem similar to ours and he extended/retracted the cable repeatedly until the roof started operating again. Presumably you've tried this already?

I've disconnected the cable completely and operated the sprung valve manually over and over again, which is effectively the same as operating the cable. I'm going to try it again but introducing lots of oil at the same time to see if it helps. A forum member did this yesterday with success. I found this fixed mine briefly but it then reverted back to intermittent operation.

Are you getting a red or orange LED on the roof switch ?
I'm getting an orange LED, from memory it was flashing as I was opening/closing the roof.

If it's an orange LED then the fault is the parcel shelf position sensor. Make sure that the parcel shelf is in the lower position and check the little metal spring lever in the centre or the rear bulkhead is activated when the shelf is lowered

My apologies, it's actually the red light and not the orange light.

In the event I'm not able to fix this myself can anyone recommend a repairer in Sydney Australia who knows the Z4?

Will be the plunger on the motor that is sticking. Need to pull motor out and free it with wd40, then lubricate.
