this light came up intermittently before and would clunk when gear engaged and now its on fairly permanently
ps my zed is 2003 30i auto 5 speed
do i look to change gearoil ?

My Light came on intermittently and when I drove it with the light on the car was in some sort of limp mode and sounded generally rough but no clunks that I can remember. When no light car was fine. I eventually got it fixed and the problem was the auto transmission switch which apparently can let moisture in and eventually fails. Cost about £300 fitted and never saw the light come on again after that.

As John said ,
More than likely that switch ,just replaced one on my latest 3.0ltr Auto £243 + fitting so about £300.
It put the car into limp or 4th gear i drove back from nottingham in that mode ,bit dodgy taking off from roundabouts.
Pic of part its on the passenger side of the gearbox 3 bolts and plug in

Tbh ,they can be intermittant ,
I found that turning it off and then on again it came out of limp mode and drove perfectly .also give it a squirt of wd40 and check the connections on the plug in connector
Just see how you go before spending ya money.

Yeah was really weird , had the car for 3 years and more or less started a month when I had car but when I turned engine off and back on again all ok. I only saw the light once every couple of months so never really bothered me. I got it replaced just for the peace of mind for the next owner. Phoned round a few gearbox repair garages to see if it was going to be a cheap fix and all but one were unsure and wanted to charge me a diagnostics fee before committing to any price. The one I used was based in Huddersfield and was 100% sure it was this but would do a diagnostics for free before fitting the new auto transmission switch. This was the one who knew what the problem was over the phone.Took around 45mins while I sat in waiting room. Extremely happy with the service I got .
