Yellow oil light after turning engine off? N52

Checked my oil on the electronic gauge and it showed 2 bars. Haven’t used the car for 3 weeks due to a failing water pump, so only drove it local

Anyway, I turn the engine off and my car beeps and the oil light was on the dash, which wouldn’t turn off

I’m confident it’s not low as it’s tecently been serviced and I’ve replaced the CCV where it was leaking some oil

Any ideas what this is? Making me a bit worried about driving it. These issues are driving me up the wall at the mo!

I wouldn’t ignore the add oil warning light, the car could still be burning it~did you replace every part of the ccv?

As above it needs oil. If the level sensor had failed it would appear after startup for 5 seconds, if it happens on shut down you need to add a litre

Mine does this occasionally M54 engine. Oil top up and all is good. I just treat it as the car asking for a little drink, nothing to get annoyed about.

Ok I’ll get adding some. Crazy how it’s used to much in such a short time!

It’s not time but mileage that matters with oil usage, how many miles have you covered since the last oil change?

I know that it’s mileage not time - Probably only in the region of 2000 miles!

I think bmw say anything over 500/litre is acceptable :o

Hmm!

I’ll top up the oil tomorrow morning and get the pump sorted so I can enjoy driving it again!

I was thinking the oil warning light would be faulty but I won’t ignore it. My worry really was not wanting to over fill it!

I had this issue both times on the only two occasions I have let a 'professional' service my car. Never had the problem myself so have concluded that they simply didn't fill it up enough.

For the cost, if I were you, I'd drain and fill myself. Even if you need to get ramps!

When the light comes on you can put a litre in without over filling, double check the electronic gauge is on empty first though in case it's a dodgy sensor... as you've not ran it for a while or done any long runs the oil could be quite thick! Check for a leak from your oil cooler/filter housing too, looked a bit oily when we did the ccv

Hi all

UPDATE

I’ve put 250ml of oil into the car and let it idle for 5 mins on the drive without revving etc

When I check the oil it’s now showing as the bars are full?

If I was to have put a litre in I am confident it would have over filled

No big visible leaks that I can see ... the mystery continues!

Drive it for 30 mins or so fully warmed up on a flat road and do another reading whilst you are driving. I think from memory it won't refresh quicker than 20 mins between checks (and it also has to be over 1,200rpm so doing it at idle is not correct). It's all a bit fickle in my opinion - can't have been that hard for them to fit a dipstick in there.
