As with all these things, if it's appeared after you've disturbed something, then that is the obvious place to start.
So I would be checking all the connections etc on the Vanos and ensuring it is all operating as advertised.
I had an issue after changing mine where the solenoid valves were sticking in the bores and therefore not adjusting the camshaft angles when the solenoid tried to move them.
A simple check, whip off the solenoid, put your finger in the hole and see if the valve is free to push in and spring back out. If not, pull it out, clean it up, oil it and pop it back in. Top one is easy, but the one down the side needs a little more flexibility in the fingers to get to.
