Yellow EML. No power. Little throttle response.

As per the title.

Last few days the idle has been eratic when cold, constantly going up and down from 500 to 1500 RPM.
Then this morning Yellow EML comes on along with yellow car on ramp.

Dip dip dip the accellerator and nothing. Floor it and nothing.
Five minutes later after warmed up i started to get a gradual gain in revs. So i tried a little run out, nope, street has a slight incline to get out
and i had to use 4000 RPM in first to get to a point to turn around.

Thinking maybe MAF, so i unpluged and nope still the same.

I have no diagnostic tools but a garage 600 meters away does but closed today.

Reason i was going out was to get a new battery

Any ideas what i should expect from Diagnostic reading or any thing else i could check in meantime ?

Cheers

The recent snap of cold weather could be the final straw for a tired battery, sounds as though you suspect it was past its best anyway. I’d replace it & try the car again

It is a good idea to invest in a basic code reader they can be purchased for a reasonable price for future use, but it maybe related to battery so best get that replaced first and hopefully that will sort your problem and save on an un needed diagnostic charge

Will get local end of street garage drop in a nice AH80 battery. Take it from there

No rush as i'm not allowed out and working from home.

If it’s a different spec battery from the oem the car’s going to need coding (mine was a 70ah)

Have stop/start. re-gen bracking. Is deffo a 80AH AGM. Swap like for like so just registration required, right ?

Local garage not allowed off site. Halfords not doing home fitting locally at the moment. Nationwide, ATS etc out of stock :?

Have booked AA Battery assist to come tomorrow. £ 35 for delivery and fitting. Fingers crossed. :)

I thought mine was a 8oAH AGM and according to some websites it was, but after speaking to Tanya batteries found it was a 70 AGM which was cheaper.

My lci has those same features & was fitted with a 70ah battery from new, have you checked the script on your actual battery? :?

Poor ol' Nigel from the AA arrived. Dropped in a nice Bosch AMG 80AH. :)

However poped a Fuse 74 an 5 amp fuse. No Dash lights or Computer terminal power.

Poor guy had to tackle the fuse box, i did warn him him, saying good job this is not on the side of the road in the rain.

Took 1.5 hours and i told him i will take break down truck to garage. He fixed the fuse and cleared many fault codes (Voltage related), but the "Throttle sensor"would not clear. Engine revs now but not responsive so still a problem.

Work in progress still, learning lots :)

Soon as the new battery dropped in, pop the fuse went. The save equipment was in but he had to disapear for 20 mins to
get the right battery. When he came back boot lights were out so i guess the save was not working. I dunno, for guy had a nightware
getting into the fuse box.

GLAD it was not me :P

£35 delivery and fitting well spent :D

It must be a problem elsewhere, fuses just don't pop like this be it 70 or 80 amps.
Since it's fuse 74 easiest solution is to find a schematic of where this 5 amp fuse is connected too if you are
unable to resolve the problem.

Still no throttle. Still irratic tick over / idle, to the point it stall's.

A talk with the local indie and a breakdown truck in the morning required. 8)

Bad news, the Indie could not read the unknown faults :? Then asked if it had been jumped started, i replied never.

Then suggested i get it into the BMW dealers as fears the ECU maybe fried and quoted a price for new one
£ 1962 + VAT :o

Will speak to the dealer in the morning, obviously will not mention "ECU" at all and let them come to a conclusion.

Well that my longhaul holiday out the window this year, oh wait up

Sounds like its jumped the chain or the valvetronic motor is jammed.

That would be my initial thought off your description...

But looking at the fault code table it would suggest a 5v voltage from DME is faulty.

But,it needs dealer level diag to look at the fault codes, not cheap fault code readers.

Update: No good new, still with the dealers. They are still suggesting the DME is fried :o

Waiting for their technical / electrics boffin to return to work Monday

Not wanting them to swap out the DME until they tell me 110% that it's fried and what caused it.

Feel a £ 3000 + bill coming :?
