Yellow Coolant indicator present

Hi guys,

I only got my Zed from BMW dealer on Sunday and as I turned on the ignition yesterday afternoon I noticed the yellow Coolant indicator was on :( , I got a bit worried as I thought the dealer should have sorted out everything before I collected the car. But then after about 20 seconds of driving the light went off and the dashboard was as normal so I continued driving. But when I finished work late last night I turned on the ignition and the Coolant light was on again, then as before after about 20 seconds it went off again. Is this telling me my Coolant tank needs to be filled? If so, wouldn't the indicator stay on continuously? Should I phone the dealer and tell them about it? The problem is the dealer people are about 2 hrs away from where I live so would I be able to pop into a BMW dealer near me and have it sorted out and have the original dealer pay me for the costs? - afterall they should have checked everything out before I collected the car right?

I'd give the dealer a ring, they should definitely pick up the tab... and a coolant warning light isn't something to be ignored!

I picked mine up nearly 2 weeks ago now and took it in today as the passenger window wasn't getting a proper seal. They're going to sort it out for me, and if it's not covered by the warranty (why it wouldn't is beyond me, but you know what the small print in these things is like!) they're going to pay for it... hurrah!

From the manual:

The yellow coolant indicator lamp lights up:
The coolant level is too low: top up as soon as possible.

Do not add coolant to the cooling system when the engine is hot. blah blah..

Dealer should definately have checked that before selling though. Fingers crossed you dont have a leak.

If you bought from BMW main dealer any dealer will fix under warranty.

I bought my Z4 120 miles away, and my local dealer is just 400 metres away.

Alternatively just stick some coolant in it when it's cold and save yourself the grief...

Could be a sensor fault though, which could explain why it stays on for 20 secs then goes out. Surely if the coolant was actually low it would just stay on?

I looked in my manual and didn't see anything similiar to the oil light (which depending on when it lights up means something different) I'd definitly check the coolant though once the engine is cool. That is one hell of a repair bill. IMO since your dealer is so far away, I would definitly check the coolant manually before driving the car over (and check for leaks). Don't want to be half way down the road and have the engine overheat.

As above first thing would check it out yourself then top up before taking the car into your nearest BMW main stealer.

Hope it works out OK and costs sweet FA.

Have the dealer/workshop check it out asap, a leak in the radiator tank or coolant pipings is not something to be ignored, the BMW temp needle only stays in the middle for a short time piror to overheating. Do a pressure test and check for leaks asap to prevent blowing your engine  If no leaks are present it could always be due to a faulty sensorm just open the coolant cap when it's cold and see if the red tip is all the way up.

Pretty certain the oil light does the same, lights for a bit and then goes out. Just fill it up a little and see what happens, if the light is yellow it's advisory, only if the light was red would there be a significant problem.

Mine was doing that and it turned out there was a leaky part on one of the hoses. I filled mine and the problem resurfaced. The light would be on for a few after start up and then go out. Check the level immediately, doing so isn't rocket science, just make sure the car is cold.

I finally took my Zed to my nearest BMW dealer and had them check for leaks in the car. And it turned out that everything was fine, the stupid people at BMW Scotthall Leeds  didn't fill up my coolant tank before I left. Surely, that's one of the most basic things they check for before letting a car go, right??
