Yaw rate sensor

Hi,
New member question

I have just bought a 2003 3.0l Z4 auto that requires some attention. I have 3 lights on the dash in yellow, traction, brake and tyre pressure. OBD advises code 5E38 which I believe is the Yaw rate sensor. Reading some reviews it appears they get water damaged. Is this correct? If so what are my options to sort it out?

Any help greatly appreciated

Has your drains been getting full of water? Or water getting into the cabin behind or under or in front of the seats especially the passenger seat which is where it is I believe.

If so then you need to stop water getting in and dry the area out. Once dry you should be fine. I had this happen to me but as soon as I sorted the drains out and the recent hot weather it's stopped popping up with the three lights.

The other thing it could be is Thea s sensor or reluctor rings. Either they need cleaned and if cleaning doesn't work on both they then will need replaced. Each wheel should have its own sensor and ring.

Welcome to the forum.
You're in luck as it's prefacelift and the sensors are much cheaper.
The yaw sensor is fitted under the driver's seat if you're in the uk. Simple to swap over. Not sure drying out will work if it's been soaked for long enough to corrode inside.
Check the door membrane is intact as this is the primary source of water in the footwells, though all other entry points should be considered too.
When you fit a new one it is worth sealing it inside a poly bag with a sachet of silica gel for future insurance.

I assume the code you received is pretty specific, though as mentioned the same lights will come on with the abs sensors. A decent code reader would tell you which one.

If you do change the yaw sensor it is accessible by unbolting the seat and lifting it as long as you don't disturb the electrical plug.
If you decide to take the seat right out, disconnect the battery and wait 20-30 minutes before undoing the plug, or you will get an airbag light that is not always simple to reset depending what software you use.

Finally, if you're happy to say whereabouts you are then you may find a helpful fellow member nearby.

Thanks for the replies guys, ordered a replacement sensor that should be here this week. When I removed the drivers seat and lifted the carpet it was damp and the sensor was showing signs of water. I have dried the floor now and leaving the seats out whilst it dries 100%. The rubber trims for the hood were not fitted as the previous owner had some issues. I have fitted these again now. Definitely need to protect the replacement. Will keep you updated. Located in Ashwicken, Nr Kings Lynn, Norfolk, UK

Ah ha! Another Norfolk member!
I used to work at Marham and lived in Northwold until I moved here about 4 years ago.
Had a bit of practice tinkering with these now.
In fact I currently have
