Y cable

Evening all, apologies in advance if this have been asked many times before. I need a Y cable to plug my IPhone 6 into the USB and AUX slot in the arm rest to play music and skip tracks. Popped into local BMW dealer today and they wanted £60 for it! I did remind the assistant that it was just the cable I wanted and not the phone as well but no, that was the correct price! :headbang: Has anyone used an aftermarket cable that they could recommend? I appreciate the genuine cable is probably very good quality but £60?.... Really?!!

try one of these

You can skip tracks by twisting the wheel , push in to pause

The steering wheel controls do not work for skip , which is why I'm looking into snap in adaptors

The wheel thingy fits nicely in the ash tray in front of arm rest if you dont have I drive

Thanks.

My car has Bluetooth so in ok on the phone front. One of the guys down at BMW service told me that I just needed a Y cable and I could plug the iPhone in and skip tracks on the steering wheel (I have up/down arrows and not the wheel) but I refuse to give them £60 for the privilege

I would be interested to see what cable they are trying to sell if they claim you can skip tracks

My car has bluetooth too , however the adaptor in the link was the only way I could skip tracks , the steering wheel controls do not work

I haven't tried with my iPhone, but I bought a cheap y adaptor on eBay to use with my iPod. Works perfectly with the steering wheel controls too.

That's exactly the sort of thing I've got.

Can anyone confirm this cable works without I drive ?

Yep - I've not got I-drive - cable works fine

I've only used it with an Ipod, but the music track/menu is displayed on the radio and the buttons on the steering wheel can be used to mute, skip tracks and alter volume etc
It obviously charges the Ipod as well

Top man thanks for confirming :) , do you have a usb socket under the arm rest ? , or like me just a cigarette lighter and 3.5mm jack ?

No I have a USB socket and 3.5mm Jack
But you can get a cigarette plug with a USB socket in the back - not sure if it would fit though depending on orientation

Ive already got a USB cigarette lighter plug in adaptor which I plug in , I wonder if this is why you can skip tracks as you have a dedicated usb slot

Think I'll just take a punt at one of these Y cables and see if it works

I think you may be right - there must be something going on in the Y cable as before I bought mine I connected the Ipod with 2 separate leads.
(USB to multi-pin socket & a 3.5 to 3.5mm jack). I got a message on the radio screen saying 'this cable is incompatible'
So I think the USB is doing more than just charging

You could contact the shop on the link I provided - I did before I bought mine and they were really helpful.
Good luck
