XYZ Big Brakes

Just saw these on eBay.

Has anybody put something like this on?
Can you give me some pointers as to what else is required for this eg. different bell housing and mountings? - I'll assume new brake fluid
And what sort of installation costs would be involved? - Because I will need to pay somebody to do this.

If you ask yourself this then yes, you'll definately need somebody for the install.

And maybe check if the park brake still works with this setup ;)
 
Let me rephrase that to avoid confusion.

If I were to buy this I will be paying somebody to install it.
Therefore I am wondering what sort of cost would that involve.

I hope that's clearer. I am trying to build a picture of what the total cost of something like this is.
 
As well as the correct bells for a zed - I don't see any caliper carriers either. Maybe worth contacting the XYZ importer/distributor and get a price on these additional parts. As for fitting probably 3-4 hours & fluid, so I would say Jonny's £250 won't be a million miles off.

Bell housing and carriers... If they make them for the z4 even... Otherwise if you have to get some fabricated maybe upwards of £500.

Get some braided hoses too maybe £50

Then 2 hours labour @ £75ph £150.

Brakes like these Look Amazing, but.......
at that cost are they worth it?

Bigger better brake are pointless with out ALOT bigger and BETTER tires!

I had some K Sport Brakes on a Renault 5 turbo track day car (small and light weight car) ended up taking them off and selling them, as the differance between light braking and a emergency stop was virtually impossible to gauge.

Dont be under the illusion that the biggest best brakes mean increased stopping power as 60-70% of braking efficency is down to quality of your tires, If you ever use these to even 30-40% of their potenial your wheel's will lock up. Bigger disks cause more friction, there for stopping power for the wheels spinning forward, your tires need to be up to this extra power for increased traction on the road surface, so alot wider wheels with the BEST road tires money can buy are required to MATCH the brakes.

Also do you want to spend £4k+ on Wheel's tires and Brakes that you can only use to with in a 3rd of their total potential?

BMW OEM brakes are made to do the job, although for vanity reasons they can look small inside a large alloy wheel, right. Remember Z4 3.0lt brakes are manufactured to safely stop a car traveling at 100mph on a Autobarn, and Z4 2.0lt brakes the same, for the same speed (but a different lighter curb weight). If you research about on here and the web youll find you can easily upgrade your Z4 brakes to larger BMW OEM for a few hundred pounds. Fronts are easy, but rears can cause a few issues because of the parking brake.

To conclude:
If you want to stop quicker upgrade your pads and tires, that alone can make a HUGE difference. :thumbsup:
and spend the '£1,345.00' on a holiday 8)

If you can bring the ABS on when slamming on the brakes on a dry road, then it's your tyres that need upgrading and not the brakes.
 
Whilst that is true up to a point, it really only applies to a single stop.

Certainly ultimate stopping power is usually tyre limited, however, there are a couple of potential advantages a big brake kit can bring:

1. Temperature management - brakes are basically simple machines for converting kinetic energy into heat and the better you can manage the heat and the dissipation of that heat the better. When you have to deal with repeated heavy braking situations, particularly close together, bigger brakes, with bigger discs, bigger pads, bigger calipers, bigger vents/vanes, etc. can a) absorb more heat before it becomes a problem, and b) dissipate it more readily

2. Modulation, feedback and centre of pressure - the large single piston calipers in the Z are extremely effective but a multi piston system allows a better distribution of pressure front to back on the pad and allows it to be centred further out on the disc where it is more effective giving better feedback and making it easier to modulate
 
This is also a good point but will only really be a major factor on a track.
On my current Z4 with its OEM big brake set up i have never experienced any brake fade driving on roads.

You (i have) can buy standard disks (vented) that are drilled which helps dissipate and vent heat further (not the fake Pimpled ones though).
Day to day driving (even a moderately exuberant weekend HOON) wont cook the brakes as long as your regularly changing the fluid.

Track day driving consists of: Full throttle, then Brake Hard, Full throttle, then Brake Hard, Full throttle, then Brake Hard, Full throttle, then Brake Hard..... for long extended periods this will 100% quickly push brakes to there maximum limit.
This is the only true justification for a major brake upgrade
 
Yes, thanks I have a reasonable familiarity with track driving ...

But I agree you are most likely to see those benefits on track, however, they are still real.

One thing I would take issue with is your recommendation for drilled discs - I would definitely avoid those for track work, at least on the front - they fill up with crud and crack far too easily.
