Xenons not levelling?

Noticed when I drove home tonight the beam seemed very low. Lower than usual, to a point where I could hardly see. I know they cycle up and down when turned on but at the moment its not doing that. Any ideas?

Thanks.

They just sorted themselves out?

Yeah, seems to have. I'm now in a quandary whether to put it into the dealers on Monday so they can check it out. The car is covered under an AUC warranty till Feb 2012. Maybe keep an eye on it and if it happens again put it in next year.

Well i've just been to check them but can't really see as it's too light. What are the obvious things to check? At the weekend I'll have to check the self level switch. (On a less icy snowy day)

Just spoke the the dealer (cancelling my booking) and he said there is a "balance weight on the front suspension" that can get "upset" if you go over a speed bump hard and that often it fixes itself once the car has been sat on the level for a while.

Now, I take all advice from a dealer with a pinch of salt. I know there are level sensors on the front and rear suspension that measure where your vehicle height is and this then tells the motors in the headlights to dip up/down accordingly. I always thought these were a long variable resistor, so no "balance weight" so to speak, but I may be wrong.

When you get in the car in the dark and switch the ignition on, you should see the headlight beam dip up & down then set at the correct level. All the cars I've owned with Xenons have done this. The X5 is more obvious as the Xenons are FECKIN bright and the beam as sharp as a knife, so it's more visible than on the Zed.

Hmmm, interesting. I got caught in some horrendous winds and intense rain on the way to work yesterday and there was a myriad of puddles/potholes. Big ones too. I just turned them on and heard them whir as if they were moving but still can't particularly see. I'll have to wait till a bit later on and see if I can see then. The car has always done the up and down cycle since I've had it but seems to have stopped. I'll give it a few days to sort itself out then if not I'm guessing trip to the dealer :(

A balance weight - new one on me
As you say sensors, one front and one rear suspension arm.

Best you can do is point at a wall and put the xexons on. They should cycle once, but won't do it again if you just switch them on and off until he car has hibernated after 15 mins or so. They just do this to remind the stepper motor where it should be set.

If thye don't cycle at all and stay low then I'd be after a faulty or snapped sensor.

Roughly whereabouts on the suspension is the sensor? Front passenger? Can I get visual access with the wheel still on or is it a wheel off job?

Will report back tonight after I finish work as to whether they have cycled or not. :)

I've found the bracket. Doesn't look snapped. Although there is an electrical connector attached, could I have damaged this in a puddle/rain? Is there a fuse directly related to leveling mechanism?

In both are complete and connected between body and suspension then is plug it into something like Carsoft for an error, or lights on, jack the corner up and see I the beam remains on the same spot. Might work?

I'd expect it to. My pdc not working threw them up related to the individual sensor not working so it woudl be my first test

Ive just been out and turned them on and they seem to be pointing forwards again. I'm a good bit away from a wall and I can see the beam
Now whereas last night I couldn't see it when close to something. So I'm praying that's it

They seem to be aiming a bit more upwards, but they didn't cycle at any point tonight the multiple times I tried them.. so I'm guessing that means still broke.
