xenon headlights sometimes auto level

greetings!
have a 2004 and usually when the car is turned on/started the headlights auto level... both (left/right) work the same consistently

a few months ago they did not, however after stopping and powering off and on they did auto level correctly - nothing changed with the car - it was maybe 2 miles down the road so no load changes...

worked as normal the next number of months

the past couple days they either auto level correctly or they move up/down a little but stay pointed to the ground and a recycle works - have not moved the car at that point so it was not the position of the car, slope of the ground nor the load in the car...

and again sometimes they work and sometimes they do not move to the right position.

no dash lights or errors seen

thanks in advance for any guidance, I have read all the posts that I could find about headlights and most are either HID or aftermarket or stop working permanently. Since both either work or don't - I assume a sensor is going bad vs the motors that adjust, but is it common for a sensor to sometimes work?

I did have something similar on my E86. Didn’t have any dash warnings, but when I scanned the car there was a code that came up about the auto levelling. I was going to buy a new piece, don’t think they are too much and they just bolt into the suspension arm (I think) but the problems seemed to rectify itself and they are levelling every time now. It’s possible the piece was just a bit sticky??
