Xenon headlights not lifting

Hi - neither of my xenon dipped headlights seem to be rising into the proper position and instead shine only a few metres away - really not much use. Main beam is slightly better but still way short of what it was.

I can't find an identical thread to this - anyone else had this problem ? I think I read somewhere about a stepper motor - but would both fail simultaneosly or are there even two ? might it be a relay ? I don't think it's a fuse - all seem OK. Is it likely to be something an independent garage can fix or will a trip to dealers be needed ? Any advice welcomed.

Hi,

I have the same issue every now and again, try looking at the sensors on the front and rear RH suspension. seeing as its both lights, i doubt a steper motor. I took my back wheel off and the sensor is missing on the rear, maddness!

Only one of the rears has a sensor, which side did you remove?

thanks for responses

can someone tell me where precisely the sensors can be found ? Do the wheels need to come off first ? Could these have been dislodged whilst Eibach springs were being fitted (by a independent specialist) ?

I'll need to get it looked at by same specialist I think.

thanks for responses - it's not yet fixed but problem has now been firmly identified as a broken arm on the front (O/S) levelling sensor - which means a whole new sensor - might call Joe at Sopers - I've found a very local ex BMW mechanic who might prove very useful with such matters. Anyone else replaced these sensors ?

It seems like I'm too late to help, was going to suggest the sensor arm being broken. Once you said you'd had some springs replaced it pretty much confirmed it for me. If they didn't disconnect the arm then when they drop the original struts out it'll drop and snap the arm, it's only made of plastic. They cost about £30 from the dealers.

I've just had 2 replace the front sensor on mine. 70 quid for the part from a dealer iirc, fitted it myself, twas easy. Front right wheel off max 3 bolts to remove old sensor then just fit new one, took all of half an hr.

Did the headlight levelers breaking coincide with having new suspension fitted by any chance (saw Eibachs in your sig)? Ive seen so many threads over the years of people changing suspension and forgetting to remove the auto-level sensors. If so, the people who did it may be liable. :)

Although Eibachs were fitted some months ago - I'm pretty sure that it is how it broke - even though it was a Glasgow ish BMW independent specialist who should have known better ! probably too late for a claim but worth a try...
