Xenon headlight failure

Started the car this morning and got a CC-ID-121 code (d/s/f headlight). Took a look and the headlight has ineed given up the ghost.

With these being Xenon / HID (delete as appropriate), is this something I can buy / change myself, or is a trip to BMW on the cards? If BMW, does anyone know how much this costs?

...what with it oil usage, the squeaks and rattles, leaky seals and tail lights and now this, the E89 doesn't strke me as a very well put together car!!!

Thanks,
Andy

Firstly you might have other issues but it's the bulb that's gone. It's not something that you or BMW could foresee. It's something that happens, however I'm sure that BMW warranty the Xenon bulb for 5 years so given your car is a 2.0l version it's not 5 years old and BMW should replace for free.

Again in the handbook they tell you to get them to do it but you should be able to do it yourself. Given the fact that these bulbs are supposed to 'long life' they are not cheap and it's near enough £170ish for a replacement from BMW so you might want to give BMW UK or the dealer a call re warranty on them first.

As Angie4m said it could be the bulb, it could also be the ballast too, I'd have thought a warranty would cover the latter if you have one. If it is the bulb you don't have to pay BMW prices, check but you prob have the D2S type bulb, these should really be replaced in pairs as the colour of the light can change over the lifetime of the bulb. Also be aware of the mentioned colour, I'm not sure what std bulbs are, prob about 4300k, or you can get some 5000k+ etc for a whiter light. It's def worth buying good quality units as they tend to offer more consistent beam pattern than cheapies.

Hope this makes sense.

Apologies if you already knew this info, hope it's an easy fix

Thanks guys - the car is a 2.3i, registered in Sept 2009 (so over 5yrs old unfortunately). I'll give them a call, but I don't expect BMW to replace this for free.

How can i find out for definite what the bulb (and it's colour) are? Any recommendations as to where I can pick them up from (I can;t drive the thing at night now, so ideally want to get this sorted ASAP)

Ok so this was just a dead bulb. Nothing else sinister.
Turns out the bulbs are DS1's. £55 each from Halfords.
Garage replaced both at £20 for the job.

Indie:
Bulbs: £110
Fitting: £20
Total £130.

BMW:
diagnostic: £54
Bulb and fitting: £170 PER BULB!!!

Glad you got this sorted, i'd not heard of the D1s type bulb so i googled it for a look :?

Good that you replaced them as a pair and for a fair price too

BMW prices are outrageous, no wonder they are called Stealers :x

Yeah i think the only difference between the D1 and D2 is that the D1 comes complete with the igniter.
I was just going to do one, but i thought that if one had gone, then chances are the other would go at some point in the near future.

I'm not aware of any extended warranty period for xenon bulbs by BMW outside the manufacturers 3 year warranty. They are the only bulb covered though if you do have a BMW warranty, whether new car for three years, AUC or just extended warranty.
