I am thinking about buying a 2005-2008 x3 2.0 or the 3.0 diesel for the wife is there anything to look out for or be aware of apart from crash damage etc ie is there any known faults or problems with these cars.

My wife has a 2008 2.0D Auto with 52k miles now.

Great car! Interior is very basic and old school, but it's still a nice car to drive and performs well.

We've had two problems with it in 6 months:
- Broken rear spring, very common, same as the E85 and E46 generation
- Currently got a bulb warning light on the dash, but all lights are working.

The alloy wheels are corroded, but the car is otherwise immaculate as you can see from the photos below!!

The 2.0D can have problems with the timing chain tensioner if not maintained properly and lead to catastrophic failure.

Depending on your mileage, track down the 3.0 6cyl petrol : )

As above, Cam Chain is something to be wary of.

My sister has a 2.0d and it has cost quite a bit in the 2 years she has owned it.

I had a 2.5 for 8 years and 120k on the clock. It was our workhorse and we abused it with camping, hiking, and our Alaskan malamute. Despite this rugged treatment the car held out really well. The panoramic sunroof had to changed under warrenty as it was rattling. The water pump was replaced twice outside of warranty and the oil pressure relief valve was changed at 100k. All in, it was a great car. I upgraded it to an X5d about a couple of months ago. I would own another.

Work out the mileage you expect to cover & if under 10k a year id go for the petrol .
Currently on our 2nd 3.0 X3 & they really are bargains if you can tolerate the fuel consumption which ours sits around 19mpg town+short journeys but hits 28/30 easily on motorways .
This should reflect in price paid though & bought wisely shouldnt depreciate at all & are not expensive to maintain
Much more spacious in the boot & rear than a 3 touring with nice cabin + driving position .
Just make sure all tyres are evenly worn & BMW Star rated as if not can play havoc with transfer box
£5k should see you into a decent 05 petrol model

The mid-2000s Diesel engines such as those used in the E46 3 series had a problem where the swirl flaps could be ingested by the engine. If your considering a Diesel old enough to use these engines, ensure that the swirl flaps are removed.

Try our siser site- http://xdrivers.co.uk/ good bunch of guys who usually wil point you in the right direction. Can't help re the x3 but have a 3.0d X5 and it is a great drive.

Missed this thread - sorry.

The 3.0 did not have swirl flaps, the 2.0 did so if Diesel I would go for the 3.0. I would also go for the facelift version.

My dad has the 2008 3.0si version, which I drove yesterday actually and is a very pleasant drive. Fuel consumption on that is about 35 mpg which is very good, driven gently of course ...
