Wrapping matte white

^^^ Would be interested to see what TMC London quote, especially with a 10 year warranty.

I know many sites advocate wrapping as a way of protecting paintwork, but presumably if your paintwork wasn't in great condition (some bubbling, minor defects etc.) wrapping would make the issue worse? So you could leave yourself with a relatively heavy bill when the wrap is removed if it takes some of the paintwork with it?

Would it be wise to get the quality of your paintwork tested before wrapping. A 7-10 year old car could have some developing paint issues?

ive heard the exact opposite, wraps that dont come off or damage as they are removed thus requiring resprays etc.

i'd be interested in the long term of this to see how it gets on with chips, starting to peel off, weathering etc as it does seem a good way to go if you have the cash.

basically buy a neutral car and wrap to suit the times.....

tartan anyone??

Been thinking a lot about it, think I'm going for frosted blue. Am going to book it in to get it done soon if they supply that vinyl.

I like matte white, but I think it's going to go out of date and the keeping it clean jazz seems too intense.

I've heard nothing but good things about Total Dynamics. They might not be the cheapest but they will use quality 3M wrap and have the experience to go with this. A Lot of companies that you see on YouTube etc might be cheaper but don't be fooled by a cheaper price.

Just think of it this way; you spend £15,000 - £40,000 on a car and you put a cheap £500 wrap on it. Somethings are worth paying more for! Looking forward to seeing the results, make sure you take lots of before and after photos!

From what I have heard you need to be very, very careful with wrapping.

Heard numerous horror stories about slips with blades causing rust after 3 months and the wrap taking the paint off when its removed.

I guess you just need to see lots of examples of their work and make sure its taken off using a heat gun when you are finished with it.

Just had mine 'rubber wrapped' satin white, picking it up later today. Has loads of advantages over vinyl wrapping but is new in the UK so isn't as well known yet. It's big news in the US though.

Will post pictures up later today.

Here's TD's picture of a GT wrapped Matte Blue:

(Sparkle is just rain).

Think I'm going to go ahead and pull the trigger!

@Bola, is 'rubber wrapped' plastidip? Where did you get it done and for how much? Please post pics ASAP!

what's the consequences to the paint underneath?

I've got some armourfend to remove on mine, i dont want it to be on there for the life of the car and cause a difference in paint between the protected/non-protected areas.

TD seemed confident it wouldn't damage the paintwork. They do clean it thoroughly though before hand to remove motor oil etc:

We have to ensure that all grease/wax/silicone/polymers/build-up are removed from the paintwork with special surface cleaners prior to commencing the wrap otherwise the wrap will fail.

I guess if this isn't done it runs a higher risk of damaging paint.

Edit, from their FAQ:

Q: Will vehicle wrapping damage the vehicle?
A: Applying specialist vehicle wrapping film to your vehicle should not damage your paintwork, unless there is a fault with the paint or if for any reason the paint has not bonded properly to the panel.

If you already have stone chips, abrasions or rust patches on your paintwork it’s important to remember that when the vinyl is removed it may pull loose paint off with it.

Cars 10 years old, so I guess it's a risk. My paint/body seems in good condition though so happy to take the risk.

As promised from earlier, this is how mine looks. The rear looks much better with the number plate on to break up the black:

As I said it was professionally 'rubber wrapped' using plasti-dip. Its a satin white but think I will go back next week and have a pearlescent or metallic top coat put on to give it more shine.

Advantages of this over vinyl wrapping as explained to me were; that there will be no cut marks in the paint from when the vinyl is cut to fit around trim etc. It is also easier to remove as it pulls off in one sheet and leaves no residue, as it is sprayed on rather than stuck. All that is needed to prepare the car is a good clean with alcohol so no damage to the paintwork, as it isn't stuck it doesn't pull paint off when removed either.

I used rubber-wraps.co.uk although don't think the website is live yet. Their number is 07881 633373 if anyone wants more info, as it's a new company they have some good deals on too.

Let me know what you think!

That looks fookin great how much dare I ask???

Dose look like it needs lowering now :poke:

At the moment he is doing it at cost price plus £200 but only doing that for a few weeks!

Might just be the poor pics, its already pretty low on Eibachs and 19's!

Booked it in for the 25th (next week!) for metallic blue, deposit paid.

Will take before/after pics. I've asked Totally Dynamic to leave all the badges/logos off the car as I want to see what it looks like badgeless. (If it doesn't look right am considering spraying the z4 logos black and reattaching them).

Pretty excited! Looking at getting windows tinted atm as well to complete the look.

Bit worried about how it will come out, but I'm confident it will be an improvement.
