Would you trade in for a manual M40i...?

It would be interesting to know what the sales numbers are like for the G29s that are already available with manual transmissions - in some markets, such as Germany, it's listed in the configurator as an option on the sDrive20i (maybe only the Sport trim?). We already know from press reports that they managed to sell a grand total of two manual cars into the Australian market, and as a result no longer offer it there...

Yes, only 2 in 2 years

I wouldn't trade for one, but had I had the option of getting a manual or an auto, I'd have taken the manual without any thought. But as others have said, it depends a lot on how and when you drive your Z4. Mine is a fun car, used when I don't have to drive in traffic or on (ugh) boring expressways". Give me the back roads with lots of hills and twist, please!

We have something else for knocking around town, running errands, etc. Both my wife and I are retired so our needs and wants are different than anyone who is still facing the daily grind. Driving to me has rarely been about the destination, it's about the journey. 8)

If it does get a manual then it's very very tempting, but at probably £60k it's too close to a boxy GTS 4.0. Having said that for the same spec you're looking at £85k for the porker.

If it makes enough difference i'd have to seriously consider another.

But not in purple......

That was one of my main points coming away from the GTS 4.0, there’s NO way it’s worth another £30k than the M40i (price diff with my spec)

I’ll definitely drive the manual but it’ll have to be excellent for me to change.

I’ll send you daily pictures of my purple one

Well adding carbon brakes makes my spec £91k too Andy.

Not so sure on wether it's worth the difference or not mate....those 4.0 GTS cars are pretty much perfect.

I wonder what impact only six gears will have on performance ?

Slower gear changes an and taller ratios must have some effect?

My memories of Autos date from torque converter 3 and 4 speed boxes so I've steered clear of them ever since! And I don't think an Auto would really suit an S54 engine - despite the SMG offered on the E46 M3.

I've never driven anything with a modern Autobox but I'm sure it would be a totally different experience, although giving buyers a choice can only be a good thing.

I remember the Borg Warner three speed box and it was awful

The torque converter box in my 335 and the DCT in my 35is are both an absolute dream. They are both always in the appropriate gear and the charges are lighting fast.

I hear the driving experience and proper gear changes a lot but don’t really understand it - I never heard of anyone objecting to synchromesh

Each to their own and If you like a manual then go for it!

That's probably what my 1978 Granada Ghia had, and it was pretty hopeless!

But my 1980 Mercedes 280e and 1994 C280 weren't much better, although my 1985 Scorpio was better than I expected.

I only bought them because I wanted the cars and manuals were virtually non-existent.

Every other car I have owned has been manual, and my MC and 330i are always in the right gear anyway - because I chose it.
