Would you cancel or not

My son & girlfriend left yesterday for 4 days in Rome
His girl was up for cancelling , he wasn't & most likely all will be well but there is always going to be concern until we get on top of the situation
From the recent Paris events it does seem like Belgium is somewhat of a hothouse for extremists to flourish so for that reason i would be avoiding the country altogether along with Egypt , North Africa , Turkey & even Cyprus

That's what I would have done.

As Ronk says, Brussels was hardly going to have a happy and jolly atmosphere.
 
Would they really be able to relax and enjoy themselves, if not it could be a wasted trip.
I have never been comfortable travelling abroad and have only left the UK 6 times in my life.
 
Well, I if was one of those nutters, hell-bent on taking as many of the opposition to the "promised land" with me, what better place to blow yourself up than a crowded market full of people celebrating an Christian event...?
A very probable target i would say.

I'd definitely stop my wife and kids going, just for the sake of a bit of Christmas Shopping.
(Especially if it curbed their spending ! ) :D
 
PVR, unless it is an absolute necessity I wouldn't let them go anywhere in Belgium , who knows where they may attack next.

You're doing the right thing - as others have said if it was just you then no but it's your wife and daughter we're talking about !
 
Cancel everytime.

We were booked and paid to go to Sharm for the new year and had every intention of cancelling but the travel agent managed to change the flight destination and for £150 admin we are off to Barbados instead. Would not have felt comfortable in Sharm even if the airlines started to fly there again. Your a long time dead.
 
pvr - if you check the numbers here, you will see that Belgium has the highest number of fighters per capita than any other western nation - and the headcount numbers are around double those from the UK. Hotels, shopping areas, restaurants, football stadiums are all "soft" targets where a terrorist can gain maximum casualties and media exposure - I would be avoiding them this year.
 
The enemy is in the whole of Europe with its non existent border controls,
So nowhere is safe and your still more lightly too die in a car crash.

You have to remember that when our politicians come out with these statements that they travel with high security arrangements!

+1 if we're talking about Bruges ( knowing PVR Brugge is probably the correct name ) We went on a city break there - beautiful clean city - can't remember what the shops are like but the architecture is breathtaking :D
 
On the other side of the coin, Brussels is probably the safest place to be with all the security. not much of a shopping trip if all the shops are closed though. you've done the right thing cancelling, i would go myself but wouldn't send my loved ones.
 
Isn't it such a shame. They are heading towards crippling Europe either way. With guns or with terror.

Amazon will be rubbing their silver lined palms together.
 
Mike and I were due to fly out to Paris for my birthday the day after the terrorists struck in January this year. We both didn't want to go and didn't care about losing money on the flights. Hotel was refundable. The insurance company said that unless the foreign office decided against travel they wouldn't refund the flights. Even if we had decided to go we would not have enjoyed ourselves at all. Ended up going to a spa hotel in Malvern instead.
 
For what it's worth - not going somewhere does mean they win, however in this instance - Brussels tube was/is shut, people locally have been advised not to go out and terror threat is imminent - and there's an ongoing manhunt for one of the men involved in the Paris attacks in the city..

..thus i think you'd be wasting your time going, and probably the only people there. You're not 'avoiding potentially risk places' in this situation, you're avoiding 'the place where the authorities believe terrorists are currently operating/hiding and intending to act'. It's been militarised and is now essentially as close to a warzone as the EU will get at the moment!

May i recommend the highlands? :)
 
Looks like the terrorists won , no one on this forum dare take a stand according to the replies ,
Realistically your probably safer going to a high risk area as the terrorists aren't stupid , they will cause a commotion in one place then strike somewhere low risk , or at least that's what I would do in their position .
I can't believe they haven't struck a football stadium yet, live tv , full of westerners ?
