Would this happen?

I spoke to a trader yesterday selling a Z4 and he said that they had, had to take the drivers seat out due to a pen being stuck in one of it's runner and this had caused the air bag warning light to come on.

What do reckon, true or false reason for the airbag light to be on?
 
Not sure but my friend who works at BMW had a Z4 come in last week and a woman had put her shoes under the drivers seat then adjusted the seat caused some damage i'm sure it was to do with air bags but i would have that checked by BMW
 
The airbag connector is in the middle underneath the seat. I have had the seats out and the airbag sensor disconnected. There is no way a pen would trigger that.

They weren't implying that the pen had caused the light to come, but the removal of the seat to remove the pen had caused the light to come.
 
If you remove the seat with the battery connected, then yes - that would happen indeed.

If you disconnect the battery, remove the seat, reconnect the plug underneath the seat, then reconnect the battery - all is fine.

To reset the indicator is a 5 second dealer job though ...

If you want to be exact then disconnecting the passenger seat then turning on the ignition while still disconnected will trip the airbag sensor.

I know I did it while switching out my seats as I moved the car. :headbang:

To be safe you should have the battery disconnected anyway for 30 mins prior to disconnecting any airbag or part of its circuit.

The light can be reset by the dealer clearing the error codes at a cost of £40 (I know I paid it 10 days ago). I now discover that due to EU law BMW have had to give the code information to any independant who wants it. My local garage hooked up my BMW last Friday to demonstrate. He had all the software except the Z4 but will have it this week. Therefore the long held belief that only a dealer can reset is not correct.

But what's really funny is i did it again but with the door connector - Still this time its being reset for free by by local guy and the stealer is having no more of my money
 
Ok - was not aware that the door connector would make it trigger as well. Learned something new there :D

Pretty stupid actually. While fitting the speakers, door cards etc. at some point I had the door connector off and turned on the ignition to test the new speakers, checking for current or something and forgetting the airbag next to me.

My local guy reckons barely a day goes by without one of his mechanics tripping an error code from airbags to mass air sensors, etc. Seems it's all too easy.
