Worth Shipping To Australia?

I have a 3.0 pre face lift Z4, which now needs new discs and pads and a wheel refurb which i plan on doing, i currently have it for sale on Piston Heads and i am looking for around £8000 its done 46k as i am migrating to Australia in a couple of months.

With the market how it is right now for the E85 roadster is it just worth just taking it with me and spending a bit of money on it over here ? If so how much will it cost for it to be on the road in Australia?

Not sure of costs but had a friend who took his vehicle with him and cost quite a bit to convert it to conform with Aussie road law - certainly worth doing your homework before shipping it and then finding the conversions costs are prohibitive.

I'd be amazed if your research came up with any conclusion other than it just isn't worth the cost / hassle for a vehicle of that type and value.

Sad but true.

Oz gov will do a valuation on the car. You will pay tax on that, as well as import duties and costs to get a safety cert. However, its not all bad. -Your car is worth alot on Oz. I looked at importing my coupe to Brisbane last year. In hindsight it was a missed opportunity. Search the web to get the docs on importing to oz. If gives you the full info. Its really quite easy.

I don't know if this will be much help but my Dad brought our Renault Espace over to Australia from when we were living over in England and if I remember correctly all up it cost him about 3000 pounds (don't have pounds symbol, Aussie Keyboard). He used these guys, but we were sorting it out from this side. http://www.carmenimports.com/cms/ I will try and get some more details if you need. Hope this helps.
Tristan.

Just make sure the govt valuation / tax calculation is not based on Aussie Z4 values...!?!

You'll also need to include shipping / insurance costs too.

Also, private import values are generally (much?) lower than Aus delivered vehicle values. The exception might be when you're talking about an established classic such as an e-type jag or Aston DB5 etc.

Isn't there an excemption for cars taken as part of a household?

I know this is the case for moving from / to the USA where cars can be taken as household material and won't attract any tax. You have to keep it a year though.

You must be able to prove that you have owned the car for over a year.

It will be taxed based on Oz value, not UK.

There on no household exemption.

-Being brief.. On my phone. :)

Well OP for reference your car would probably be worth around the AU$30 to 35k mark here at the moment (depending on condition it's in), which at the current exchange rate translates to 18.8 to 22k pounds. This is at least 10k pounds difference to what you have it for sale for and I highly doubt that it would cost you anywhere near that much to import it...

Zed five - are you sure? I have heard you can bring your personal car over from UK, if you are moving here to live for pretty cheap.

I imported my old car ( Nissan skyline) from Japan and it cost less then 5k aus.

I know you can't do a normal import now as the aus gov won't let you personally import a car less then 20 years old (I originally wanted to import a Z4M, but it wasn't allowed :headbang: ) but I thought you could bring in a car you own, when you move here

you can import it no problem . If you can prove that you have owned for a year and not. Just bought to import. The Oz government will value it (over value it) and you pay tax on that. Much cheaper than buying in Aus, particularly if you get it in a angle container with the rest of your stuff. It will need new km only clocks.

That can't be too expensive can it?

Such a stupid rule. Other than protecting companies like Holden what else does this achieve?

Km clocks for BMW will be pricey. Much better to buy here and take with you. Everything BMW is daft price there.

there is no age restriction on a car. Definitely not. However if it was pre 1986 I think its tax free. Holden only make one car in Oz now. I think the rest are imports.

If you do take yours you can pick up v8 commodores or falcons for very little. Or how about the last of the v8 interceptors?

the v8 falcons / commodores are fun, and they have loads of grunt - but I still kick my friends Commodore in the twisty bits. that said tho you can get a 2010 v8 commodore with leather for 1/2 the price of a 03 z4.

Zed five - you can bring in a personal car if you move here, but if your an aussie and you want to do a personal import, it's practically impossible. I rang every import/ transport company I could find in my efforts for a Z4M. but that is what they told me, I never read the actual law on the government website.

Zac - The only reason they wont let you import, is because they tax new cars so highly, and dont make the same profits off imports :headbang:

OP - as zed five said - I would definitely buy any BMW parts you need in England before you come. At BMW last week they quoted me $980 for an unpainted M Bumper and $1400 for the Aero Side skirts :o + painting + fitting... Obviously I told them to stick it

Yes but you're not getting half as much car :D

(Sorry but I carry an irrational hatred of all things Holden)

I too looked at importing prior to purchasing my Zed, and found the same as Hotride: you have to have had the car registered in your name overseas for at least 12 months otherwise you simply couldn't import it. Vintage cars (>30 years old) were exempt from this rule, probably contributing to why there's so much importing of US muscle cars going on...
