Worn teeth on handbrake, Cost?

Just got my car back from Sytner BMW. I wanted the handbrake replacing due to the teeth in the mechanism being worn. There so worn they barely hold the car on a slope. They quoted £285. Unfortunately I then had a phone call saying after putting the car up on a ramp, they could see the heat shield needed replacing the bolts on the exhaust had rusted. They made a recording so I could see these issues but now the quote is around £800 as they are too scared of removing parts that may then need replacing. (Heat Shield etc)

So question is has anyone else had this issue and what was the cost?

What would a replacement heat shield come in at?

Just wondering if an indey would be much cheaper.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I’ve seen recently that they are an expensive part to buy and have fitted.

If you was thinking about a DIY job I have a handbrake leaver for sale that was taken from my x4 I’m breaking, no issues with it :)

£285 (inc VAT?) from a dealer to replace the handbrake is fine - paid only slightly less for mine recently at an indie. It’s a PITA.

How have they justified the additional ~£500 in terms of parts/labour? You could probably replace the entire exhaust for that.

They re saying the heat shield needs replacing, they are also worried about removing the exhaust due to rusted bolts holding it on, They also mentioned something else needed replacing but cant hear on the video what hes saying.

I've had my handbrake replaced recently from a Indy BMW specialist and it was about the same as your quote (including VAT). The heat shield I've no idea.

Is it the handle mechanism you mean - like this?4A45A668-3EE5-48F0-87DD-F59CB8F8E6A3.jpeg

This seems to be in good working condition and is surplus to my needs

It’s yours if you want it - in the spirit of forum community you can have it free of charge if it helps..... only thing is I’m in Thailand.

It sounds like they're just making you aware of the risks in removing very rusty, worn parts so there's no shock bill at the end
