worn ratchet mechanism on handbrake

Recently I have been having problems with my handbrake which now I know to be the ratchet mechanism being worn. Could any please tell me if this is a simple fix or not? I know with older cars this would be a simple cheap job but with newer cars you never know. Thank you

I had my handbrake shoes done on mine as the handbrake wasnt always holding the car. I had my rear disks and pads done at same time but it is fine now.

I saw this post while browsing that might help based on your issue http://www.justanswer.com/uk-car/1g51d-hi-2003-bmw-z4-recently-brake-shoes-changed.html

Thank you for the reply but my disks and pads are fine its just the ratchet mechanism that is worn. It has been checked by a bmw specialist but being a bank holiday I can not contact them

I think I've used my handbrake 5 times in 5 year - 5 MOt's

Real OEM shows it as a complete unit of handle and ratchet. Looks easy enough to fit.

I had a feeling it was a complete unit, thank you. Its under AUC warranty but after my recent experience with my supplying dealer and them refusing to fix my roof motor failure I was hoping I would'nt have to use a dealer again. Maybe I shall ring a more helpful dealer again, thanks again

I have the same issue. Local garage says £85for the ratchet, plus an hours labour to fit.

Having MoT work done next Friday, so will likely add ratchet to the list.
