Working on Leap Day ???

This may start some debate…., Who is working Monday 29th Feb ?

Are you getting paid for it, or should it be a day off ?

I remember when I worked for one of the 4 large Banks and had a Mortgage. We all had a letter in February informing us that we would be debited an extra days interest and that our monthly payment may be a few quid higher than other months, to compensate for the extra days borrowing that year. On a similar note we asked why we were getting paid the same salary as a 365 day year and the same holiday entitlement, so in reality giving the company an extra days work for free. Whilst the bank recognised the extra day for borrowing interest, they were not prepared to note it for salary !

So, should you we all working on leap day if salaried ??? (I'm not - I'm off on Annual Leave !)

I've never thought about this. So basically I'm being paid an annual salary for 365 days (less annual leave), therefore I should be paid an extra day's salary for the 29th.

Yep - or given an extra days leave !

Umm, not really.

Banks calculate interest daily, hence the increase.

Your employment contract will state either per calendar year, not per 365 days, or it might be a monthly contract. But it's not likely to be daily. And regardless of 28 or 29 days, Feb is still 1 month.

Unless you're a freelancer (ahem) who charges by the hour, so an extra day's work = extra days' pay. #Winning

I am sure that my employer would argue that my salary is based on a 365 1/4 day year and that leap years are the only ones in which they win! I'm OK with that because I win in 3 of 4 years. :)

So have you ever known anyone leave a compnay and their remaining holiday entitlement/pay be adjusted by the 1/4 or 3/4 day due to them not staying and working the leap day next year ?

Its not a big deal but I think it's not generally considered and it gets taken for granted.

Try taking out an insurance Policy and see if your next renewal date is in 4 years time !

Own business - clients pay daily, so an extra day of pay. As the calendar works this year it's more than some full 31 day months = v happy.
Reality is it all levels out over time as I get no sick pay, holidays, etc., and may have to take weeks/months off between assignments.

I do remember an old boy at a bank I worked for many years ago refused to work on a 29th for the logic stated by op. Didn't cut it then either, so he just worked slowly :)

I wouldn't really expect an extra days pay.

They do enough for me on the other 365 days so an extra day I don't mind working.
