Wooly Steering

Hi guys,

Drove in to work this morning and the steering felt a bit woolly - like I had to turn the wheel loads just to get a response. Quite scary!

I'm going to go straight to my mechanic on the way home, but wondered if any of you might have any ideas what it could be?

Thanks!

.... ice .... errr, have you hit a kerb or pothole recently to knock he tracking out. Notice mine on summer tyres below 7 degrees doesn't have that dig in feel, but thats to be expected.

just a theory, but i've read that the electronic steering in the z4 is "speed proportional" so it might somehow but stuck at a high speed setting, or the system is somehow damaged. not that i would know at all how to fix that, just trying to get you some info. hope it all works out and is not to expensive

If still on run flats might just be excessive tramlining with low pressure in the tyres.

Well my new baby's spending the night at the mechanic - not cool! They said theyd look at it first thing in the morning.

Got the car back. My mechanic didn't find anything wrong other than the tyres were slightly over inflated. They checked the steering, suspension and tracking and it was all fine. I don't know, to me it still feels like the steerings not very responsive - almost like the tyres are on ice. Perhaps this is normal for Z4's? I've never owned one before, not any sort of BMW, so don't have anything to compare it to.

Does your car have sport button? The electric power steering doesn't give much feedback. If you have sport mode, try it. Might see some improvement...?

Yep Adam, the good ol' sports button does give a bit more feel, which is great. I'd use it all the time but couldn't afford the petrol!

This is interesting. Not heard about this, but I'm learning more every day! My mechanic gave the car a good look over for me and said its in good condition, which was great to hear!
