Woke up to this ...

I got a call this morning that about 15 metres of my fence had been flattened. So out I go, and yes - big gap with a smashed fence.

Fortunately, I found a number plate in the debris so called the police. Got the reference number etc and reported an accident with failing to stop. To my amazement, I got a call an hour later from the police to tell me that they actually attended the accident, so did an ambulance as the woman was injured. However, they did not notify me as they did not know who the fence belongs to.

Call me simple, but would you not go to the drive adjacent to the fence ???

Then another classic - they could not give me the details of the driver because of data protection act. Uh - if you are in an accident, don't you have to exchange insurance details? Weird ... But another battle to concur to get that out of them.

Here the results ...

Just wondering would that be covered by your homeowners insurance and then they would fight to get the insurance company of the driver/owner of the auto to then pay them.

First, sympathies... pain in the arse that one!

Or even wander through the garden?

I almost miss the good old days where the police would've called, "person crashed through the fence, here's her details. Also, I hope you don't mind but as it was a chick we took the liberty of visiting her old fella and give him a bit of a slap for your inconvenience... after all, what's he doing letting a Dorris drive around in these conditions anyway? Irresponsible!"

Have they at least agreed to pass your details to the lady in question? Hope she was okay.

Good thinking, I would do that too, let them fight it out amongst themselves

In the old days - yes.

Nowadays, you involve your insurance company and they will increase your premium next year as if you had a claim (does not matter that it is a non fault one), statistically you are more likely to have another claim (i.e. the bending of statistical data).

The police have not called back yet with the requested information. The crash was at 3:30 in the morning (so yes - what was Doris doing there in her Automatic Polo ...). Police attended for 3 hours - but failed to find my drive obviously ...

What a bunch of liars! They're just insulting your intelligence! Hope you get it sorted...

Out of interest... how far does your fences go down that road? It looks like a big mahoosive estate you've got there!

Why are the Police such a waste of space? What a load of bollix, data protection my arse. :headbang: I think your insurance company might be able to get her insurance details from the number plate. Then contact their insurers and put in a claim.Worth a try.

I thought it was the law you had to exchange insurance details after you had an accident. So even if that person has been taken to hospital etc, that surely should not prevent the exchange to take place?

I found the name of the police officer dealing with it at the time now, unfortunately it is one of those "plastic" police officers, hence the lack of common sense I suppose.

If you've got dogs, you should start mentioning neglegence of the attending officers, as they didn't secure the property after the incident.. meaning when you let your dogs go for a sprint this morning, they could easily have got out onto the road.....

My father had a very similar problem (fence knocked down, police removed car but didn't inform him of issue) and our dog was actually hit by a car (thankfully not hard enough to do any real damage). but the only reason he was hit was because the police didn't inform our family of the downed fence.
The police ended up paying all of the vet fees, as well as getting the fence fixed :)

Update - Finally got the call back from the police after involving a friend of mine who works for the police (not traffic, real police). I now have the insurance details.

Tesco of all companies ... I called them this morning and was on hold for an hour !!! I am soooooooooo glad that I do not have a policy with that company as they sure are horrible !!!

I put a formal complaint with Tesco as well when the call was finally answered, as on their holding message they kept sayting that you could complain if you were not happy with the company performance :)

To top it all, my neighbour reported that there were snoopers around so the police has been driving up and down the road to look for them. I feel nicely exposed now with a large gap in the fence. The whole point of putting that fence there was to prevent what happened twice before - that burglars park their car off road to load it up !!

Good to hear you got there in the end, always useful having a contact in the police

Shame it took so much of your time to get that far

Reference Tesco, and the like... I do think it's worth paying a little more to go with one of the more reputable companies! Not that it helps you in the current situation.

All they need to do now is fix the fence, and soon!

Right ... called Tesco again to get a move onto it - and strangely enough, you get put through to Direct Line !!

So if anyone wonders - Tesco is a broker for Direct Line then ...

I had precisely this problem with Tesco Insurance (a Tesco third party insured young driver in a Corsa hit our driveway pillar) You might find that you cant make a complaint as you are not their customer. Therefore, Tesco's advice was to contact the driver (whose details you dont have as the Police would not provide them), ask him to complain to his insurance company on my behalf. They will then investigate.... but wont get back to me about it as I'm not thier customer, The driver would need to 'feed back' thier response to me. Given the little twerp left the scene because he was under the influence of some mind altering substance, I can see him helping me out somehow...what world do these people live in?

Oh, I got all details from the police ok. Name / address / phone number / mobile number. I spoke to the girl as well. No appologies what so ever of course ...

Must remember to ebay some spare car parts which are still on my land :x
