Wobbly Exhaust

Hi All,

Today I have noticed a fair amount of movement on my passenger side exhaust....I had a quick look under both sides....couldn't see anything obviously broken...

Anyone experienced this?

Worth taking to my local indy??

Thanks,

Alex.

Probably the flanges between the mid section and backbox have cracked/broken. Common issue, and you can get replacement flanges from ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E46-M...ke:BMW&hash=item2354b8bd54:g:UfkAAOSwLVZVo6QD. Apparently the fit on these may not be perfect looking at M3cutters - if you can find Talkwrench on cutters, he makes ones that fit perfectly, but are much more expensive.

Thanks zmaster007. I'll have another look tomorrow in the day light. I hope nothing falls off on my way to work....

Good timing. Mine too need sorting and am planning on taking it to a recommended exhaust centre in Dagenham on Saturday to get them fixed.

If the ID is the same then I can't see there being any issues. Wonder if the guy is just pissed as he has competition and that they are also much cheaper.

Rear boxes as prob know only have 3 points
Hangers literally only hold
Main weight is at flange to X pipe
Or possibly a hanger has gone soft ?

Ramp or jack and wobble:)

I remember seeing a thread somewhere where someone had to grind the holes out a bit to make it work, but even still, the cheaper ones are still worth it.

Will let you know soon when I change my back boxes. The modified ones I have have a cracked clamp so will need to use the ones I bought as listed above.

I have a Peugeot clamp one side after the OEM clamp failed through corrosion. The two backboxes hang symmetrically and I've had no problems since it was fitted a few years ago. I think it cost under five pounds.

I used the clamps sold by Talkwrench on M3cutters and they were spot on but expensive at £120, I don't think he does them anymore having been seriously undercut. The eBay ones seems to work well too from what I've read. The problem you might encounter is that the movement you've had already may have irretrievably damaged the fluted ends on both the back boxes and the x pipe. That's what happened to mine, I replaced the flanges but there were already cracks at the end of the pipes caused by the movement allowed by the corroded flanges. I had to replace both back boxes and the x pipe with used items from the forum.

Bit of an update, got the broken flange off today. I had to cut the bolts to get it off.

Fluted ends on the back box and x pipe are both buggered....any suggestions welcome.

I'm no expert buddy
But a decent exhaust guy should be able to put a sleeve over or inside each and put a circular band bolt round
Just and idea?

I'm not 100% but would you not lose the ability to adjust the height of the exhaust tips with a V band clamp?

Was thinking this driving home tonight after remembering somebody mentioned this is the only way to align the back boxes.

Im guessing the clamps have been done up too tight which is why the flutes have failed.

Keen to get my new back boxes fitted and to check, but Suso concerned what I might find now

At hutch
As you said
Yup rear boxes only supported by two hangers
The weight is essentially on the joint as you adjust height at level of boxes on these two rear flange joints:)
