Right then .......... :D heres some madness for you

Saturday Im on the boat to Norway with the Zed (M)..... and its snowing hahahahahaha
Last year I did this in my old range rover 4x4 ....... what do you think, 300 plus bhp ..... icy roads....... deep snow ........

I have fitted winter tyres and the hard top is on ........ have I missed anything

One of my mates is off to the Alps skiing again this winter, which he has done several winters in a row now, he has a Lotus Exige and all he does is fits winter tyres and off he goes!

I dont think it matters how much power you have its the control over your right foot and reading the road ahead that is key to making safe progress.

As tomscott said snow chains would be a good thing to have with you aswell as stuff to keep you warm for a few hours/overnight because you never know you may get stuck, maybe take a few of those self heating cans of food and drink you can get from camping shops just in case.

But most of all enjoy your trip

I have the mandatory -40 degs C sleeping bag in the back ....
not sure about chains though ... can you get them for 255x18s ?

whichever way you look at it ...... its a proper road trip, looking forward to it.

Yes to sleeping bag and also a jet boil and some tins of food. Lots of warm clothes. Also try and get some warning kit if the roads you're on are likely to be quiet. Warning triangle, fluo jacket, torch, lighter and maybe even some mini flares (yacht chandlers)

They are probably available, but will they clear the car? According to the owner's manual, you can't fit chains on that size. But just looking at the car, a set of very low clearance cables may work. I'm not sure you can get them on though unless you have very wee hands! Or happen to have a jack to give you extra clearance. Also mind you I'm looking at the clearance of an unloaded car, once loaded....?

If you ever wear out those tyres, you can fit normal size winter tyres on 8.5" rims, for which low clearance chains will fit according to BMW. Still very tight to work your hands in to attach the inner connector.

I have the spike spiders that clamp on. Bl**dy expensive at about £350, but one of those insurance things.

I remember a few years back they stopped the Newcastle to Bergen ferry. What ferry runs now?

A tip - DO NOT speed in Norway - the fines are huge. For example, a minor offence, £500. Like everything else in Norway, expensive! But will be a great drive, some lovely roads.

Did the Lapland thing two years ago. Was amazed at how quick the coaches drove on roads which were effectively compacted snow. They never missed a beat, even when avoiding the moose which randomly wandered across the road. Nothing like a walk in -30 or more to make you feel alive! I'm very envious - have a great time.

Didn't you do similar last year teamemenracing ? Seem to remember a snowy road trip... Anyhoo, nice one - absolutely the right choice  :driving:

Well I am here in Trondheim hahahahha and it snowed all the way ...

To him that asked, yes I am working in Norway at the mo, commuting 5 days a week (KLM) ...... on that note, Last week it was all celebrations because I was finished and could get a real job somewhere ..... then I got the phone call from hell and was told my contract has been extended a year ........ its good to have a job these days, it sucks to be away 5 days a week.......

Anyway the saga ............ in case anybody is wondering, Ive done this trip a few times in the snow, twice in a '98 Range Rover etc etc ....
but you know what ......... the best car by far was the Z4 on winter tyres ........

I think its all about weight, you can have all the 4x4 you want, but when you have 2 tonnes to change direction, its still 2 tonnes ...... the Z4 weighs bugger all.

It was minus 8 in the mountains with snow and ice on the road, down at sea level it was minus 2 with wet snow on the road ........
Winter Tyres / Z4 ..... will go anywhere, no problems.

Final bit of the jouney was on hard packed ice up a steep access road, and I do mean steep ....... the Zed went straight up no worries ....

A bit of throttle control and no idiotic stamping on the brakes is all thats needed.....

Ill post some pics later today .................

Nice it worked out

I know what you mean with the 4x4 and the weight, I have been sliding with our previous X5 on "all weather" tyres straight down a hill. With winter tyres it was fine of course, but the Polo with summer tyres had no problems going down the same hill.

400 miles in 6 mins :D

when I try playing this back on here its almost invisible .....
if you click the youtube button it takes you staright to it ........

I use the "secret" boat that runs Immingham to Brevik ..... :D
Its a pure freight boat, but if you ask nice they let you on if there is room. No frills tho, bed, galley and thats it.
