We definitely need a bike thread. Haven’t been to Afan, for a while and have only done bike Park Wales since lockdown; how were the Afan trails?

Hopefully the chain was taught enough that it didn’t flex onto the bodywork as a chain would make light work of your paint!

Yeah Afan trails good, did the red route and was nowhere near as wet as I was expecting, it does drain well up there. Dead Sheep Gully and the sections before and after that quite bumpy on the Cove Stiffee, but then I probably hadn't dropped my tyre pressures enough and it is a hardtail on 26" wheels so par for the course. Will take the Norco next time!

Yeah when the chain is cinched up it clears the rear spoiler by several inches, and can't bounce in transit, so the paint is safe thankfully.

I've had two frames on a saris bones rack and managed to squeeze 4 29er wheels in the boot!
Picture here with the one frame. It's a faff but you can still get the roof down!

First few times at Afan I too had a very unforgiving hardtail but it was huge fun. The hardtail I built recently is a lot more forgiving and faster but you can’t beat my full suss for smashing down Blade.

I’ll pass on your Cove. Having ridden one many moons ago, my ageing body would not be happy

How did the bike rack perform on the Afan trip OP? I looked at the chain over your boot lip, it looks close on the 1st image, did you have any issues? I found this on the rock bros suction rack, this chap mounted it on the roof near the windscreen.

The main part of the rack in those pics is on back to front, the cylinders are supposed to be at the back so they're protected from dust and debris being blown into them… that said according to the poster, who's also a member of this forum I think, it still all worked fine

Yeah been running the Rockbros rack for the last year with the three suckers on the roof, and the single rear on the glass no problems. Multiple trips to Afan, Brechfa, Brecon and mid Wales on the 29" Norco. All plungers facing backwards, the outer two suckers of the three overlapping the double bubble edges on the roof with no issue. Great bit of kit.

Thanks for that update Owen, been umming and ahing about the suckers overlapping the double bubble edges, about to head down to Spain. So the only thing to worry about now is the vacuam holding for the 30 hour ferry crossing…

Yeah in all seriousness I'd be tempted to brace it with a couple of tie straps for that amount of movement unchecked. They need to be checked every few hours really. Couple of tie straps down to the wheels through the frame should keep it compressed on the suckers.
