wiring DRL help

Anyone know the best way to find the various feeds under the bonnet to wire my DRL's. Ive got to find a positive feed and negative feed and assume the sidelight feed. This arrangement turns the DRL's on at start-up and off when sidelights are turned on. Suppose I could get it booked into a specialist but tbh it cant be that hard....can it :?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated....please dont get too technical

By the headlight assembly?

You just need to t-tap off the sidelight.

The negative is just the chassis.

Right, the sidelight and ground should be easy enough, but a constant ignition switched positive is less obvious, but there is certainly something available. You could just poke around in the electrics box with a circuit tester and find something convenient. Depending how much additional draw we're talking about, it may make a difference where you tap into.

For a less random approach, look through the WDS and identify the best candidate: http://www.bmw-planet.com/diagrams/release/en/e85/index.htm

Thanks guys...just need the confidence not to screw the electrics up or end up with fault codes galore or a fireworks display

Might be a bit thick but can't work out how to bring the diagram up :headbang:

Nah, it's not you. The site doesn't work with all browsers. Every once in while even on supported browsers the index will not load. If you consistently get nothing your browser probably does not support the SVG graphics used by the site. Be sure you have the latest browser version. If so, maybe try a different browser? I know Firefox and Opera work, and Chrome too IIRC.

If you're doing all that, I'm out of ideas. I'll try to find something for you to connect to if you just can't get it working. How much current do you suppose will be drawn for the switched positive? What year is your car?

Hi
Must admit only tried it on iPhone and iPad, ill give Mozilla a try later
Power consumption is 15w. The pos comes with a built-in fuse. My bmw is a 2003 2.5 e85
Cheers

Does that work on some sort of relay? As it attached directly to the battery so the switched live just turns the relay on and off and the battery powers your lights

The relay is to turn the light off.

The little box where everything plugs in monitors voltage and when the engine is on (14v from alternator) the DRL comes on.

Then the sidelights will be turned on and the DRL will turn off (after all, they are called daytime running lights).

When the car is turned off the voltage will fall to 12v and subsequently the DRL will also turn off.

So you just need to connect to the jump start point under the bonnet for you +ive

Ah! I had assumed ignition switched power was required. On closer look at the diagram, it does appear that constant unswitched power is what's needed, so as sam1832 points out, tap into anything coming off the jump point.

I don't quite see how this would work, but no matter, that's what it shows.

It has a black cover with a + on it and has a big thick black cable going to it

Thank you Sam
Funnily enough I came across an app for iPhone which gives better fitting instructions and yes it is connected straight to the battery positive and negative.
Cheers

I've took the plug off the back of the headlight to try and find the sidelight feed but I appear to have 3 wires that come live when sidelights switched on. Any ideas. Anyone know what colour I should be looking for to tap off?

Looks like it only work with the side lights on. You would need to find an ignition switched feed for this wire instead, or drive with sidelights on which defeats the object.

No I've watched the osram fitting video and the box of tricks needs a sidelight feed which turns the DRL's off when sidelights come on
Just need to know what colour is sidelight feed
