wiring a dashcam

Has anybody found a way yet of wiring the dashcam so that it provides protection when the engine is turned off and the car is parked up. I have found a few instances on here of it being wired into a switched wired protection power source, which is great when you are on the move, but not when parked up somewhere
 
I've just wired in my Blackvue 750 using their power magic, piggybacking onto fuses F48 CD-Changer (powered all the time) and F28 Cruise Control (powered with ignition). Works well :)
 
If you are happy to feed it from the fuse box with one of these then no problem at all...

How does that work, strictly in newb terms? You obviously plug that into the fuse box, but how do you then wire the dashcam into that gadget?

The dashcam will have an external power supply (12V to 5V converter) so it depends how that power supply is terminated. Some are the type that you plug into the fag lighter, in which case you could just cut the fag lighter plug off to give you two bare wires. The positive goes to the wire on the piggyback fuse thing, the negative goes to any chassis ground point (there is a crosshead screw just below the fusebox which is very convenient).

Alternatively, you could junk that and just buy something like this...https://www.amazon.co.uk/Graceme-Charger-Inverter-Converter-Connector/dp/B075K8H4DV/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1529582558&sr=1-3&keywords=12v+to+5v+dc+converter+dashcam

You need to make sure it has the right output connector to plug into your dashcam of course, most are micro usb nowadays but check.
 
When fitting the Blackkvue 750 has anybody found a way of fitting the rear view camera in an E85, taking account of lowering the roof ???
 
I chickened out and got the front only. Was thinking of sticking it between the roll hoops but thought, it would be so easy to nick when the roofs down, and mine is always down unless it's raining, just went for the front.

That is great, thanks very much! Mine has the cigarette lighter type plug and is micro USB on the camera itself :thumbsup:

No probs. In that case you would either need to but a separate power supply as in my link or a female fag lighter socket so you can use your original power supply....not very elegant though as fag lighter stuff is not that reliable in terms of electrical contact.

The Blackvue Power Magic uses a lighter socket too, just has an extra wire and a switch; got mine from Halfords for 20 quid :)

One is a permanent supply, the other is a switched supply. That way the unit know whether you are driving or parked with the engine off.
 
I've just got the mini 0906 with the rear camera. I was thinking of putting the camera just behind the wind shield, but it would be too low as the roof sits a little bit high when lowered. Maybe I could attach it to the wind shield some how.

I've no idea how to run the cable in though. Anyone done this before on the e85?

Would this then connect to the fuse piggy back unit?
