I have a strange noise coming from my wipers (ive called it a donkey noise). It doesnt always happen so im having a hard time pinpointing it and i thought id consult the experts (you guys) before taking it apart.

Heres a video with sound that may help:

If anyone knows where this noise is coming from, if its common or even if theres a tutorial for it thay would be great?

Ah! I hear it. A very faint squeak. Just oil the pivots of the wiper arms and dont forget where the spring attaches.

If this fails dont go out in the rain or if you have to, turn the radio up!

The light oil worked on mine - only when I oiled the spring attachment area.

Ive had this exact same thing on my old 2.5si and also on my 3.0si - it was the wiper arm and not the blade.
I had it replaced under warranty and they will be doing the same today as its in the dealers for this and other stuff
You will get the same noise when stopped and you lift the wiper off the screen and turn on the wipers - oii eeeee :)

:withstupid:

Dealer replaced my motor before realising it was just the arm that was needed. All under warranty though :D

mines still under warranty with the dealer i bought it from and has to go back for something else so I may as well add this to the list and try for new wiper arms :) thanks guys, much appreciated!

Mine does this too. Isn't it just a warning sound to tell you the wipers are on?

you kidding right?? if not, no this isnt a warning sound, more like a rusty squeak while your driving? You shouldn't need a warning you wipers are on, they wave past your eyes every couple of seconds.

Err... That was a joke :poke: :poke:

got my car back today and erm - the noise has gone but i have new wiper blades - when i knew for a fact it wasnt them (lift wiper off car and turn on wiper - they made the noise). havent checked closely yet to see if they have replaced the arm also - but either way - thanks BMW for the new free blades! :driving:

That's strange that the issue is the wiper arms. The arms don't actually do any moving on their own, they're locked into the wiper transmission which rotates back and forth. Usually this type of squeaking is the wiper transmission (sometimes called a wiper regulator) that sits above the firewall / beneath the wiper blades and connected both blades to the wiper motor.

But glad you got it all sorted out anyway.

Usually this type of squeaking is the wiper transmission (sometimes called a wiper linkage) that sits above the firewall / beneath the wiper blades and connected both blades to the wiper motor. That's where all the rotating and actual movement takes place.

BTW for reference, this is the part I'm talking about where the squeak usually orignates from:

Id got the impression from previous posts it was coming ftom the arm where its spring loaded to stay on the screen. The part where you bend your wiper up if your washing the car?

Ill try oiling all places :-)

Lift the arms off the screen - if the noise goes away it's in the arm.

I have this image of loads of cars driving around with their arms up off the windscreen now as the cure for squeaky wipers lol
