Wiper Problems!

Hi,

I have just bought a Z4 3.0i but I have just found out I am having a few issues with the wipers.

1) When pushing the stalk down for a single wipe the wipers do between 1 and 4 sweeps from the single stalk press.

2) In auto mode it seems it is doing this multiple sweeps too when it shouldn't.

3) Wipers don't always seat fully down on the windscreen but sometimes do.

Any ideas what it could be?

oh and welcome .... he is the link for anyone else http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=15283

Same problem just developed on my '04 Z4. What a royal PIA!

Anyone have a link to the repair doc with working pics, or an old PDF of the repair with pics?

Thanks,

Brian

New to Z4 by a couple of months, and today my wipers decided to stop and start and stop and start again.
Hasnt done it before.
I have been told the issue may well be grease on the contacts in the wiper motor.
There is a walkthrough fix on bimmerforums.com with photos under "fix walkthrough for faulty wipers", I have printed it off and will try it out tomorrow, doesnt look like you need to be mechanic of the year to fix it, but some basic knowledge and the odd special screw driver bits are required, my local specialist thinks it a faulty relay at £60 + fitting etc.

So I was planned to go through the step-by-step repair instructions today, but stopped at the motor disassembly. I was skeptical that this is necessary, at least as a first step.

I separated all linkages and cleaned them with a light solvent to remove the old grease. It was quite dry and sticky, and I suspect this bound up the linkage quite a bit. Perhaps this was enough to create the delay and load resulting in the relay shutting off in mid wipe. I really don't know, this is just a rough guess. Anyhow, I then reapplied a light silicone grease to the linkages and completed the reassembly.

I have been running around on errands today and testing wipers frequently without trouble. Feeling very optimistic.

Stripped the wiper assembly as per the step by step instructions, not easy to remove the 4 plastic screws and lugs that hold the wiper scuttle in place, just had to stick at it, the rest was easyish.
Cleaned away the excess grease that may have been causing the problems on the contacts and did the rebuild, have been driving in wet weather most of the day and so far all is OK.
I can hear the relay kicking in when the wipers start so I hope the problem is solved.

Curious if you opened the motor or not(?)

Sounds like you just cleaned the linkage like I did.

Good luck regardless.
