Wiper blade cracked my windscreen

I'm an idiot apparently. Took old wipers off to replace with new ones because they smear water pretty badly. Lifted the arm up, took it off and bang! The arm snapped back into place on the windscreen cracking it.

Can't get photos at the moment, looks like a fist has just punched the windscreen and 2" cracks all around it.

I'm fully comp with Admiral but my excess is ridiculous.

I know I'm an idiot, but this seems like a bad design flaw :x I didn't know you can do so much damage with such simple maintenance.

As a fairly new drive, can anyone advise me is a small crack safe to drive with, or should I be looking to replace the whole thing now? How much does that cost?

Ouch feel for you buddy. I would advise getting it done as soon as you can. Get some quotes and check your insurance it might be covered?

Cant really call it a design flaw as it's designed to keep the blade on the screen whilst flexing. It's a simple design that's been used for decades.

It's just one of those things, but you won't do it again.

I don't blame anyone but myself, but surely they could just rubber pad the contact point of your blade so you won't do £££ of damage :(

In this cold weather i'd advise getting it fixed. I suspect though as its so low will be a replacement screen needed.

I had one done last yr with admiral... £75 excess.

Feel for you - total school boy error moment.

Top tip from other forumites on here - always put a towel or thick cloth on the screen where the end of the wiper would hit, just in case

Weird how your excess is ridiculous - I thought £75 was industry standard price ? I now it ain't cheap, but at full price a new screen is at least £200 isn't it ?

I had some insturctions with some wiper blades I bought recently, glanced at them and it said don't leave the arm upright as it could spring back and smash the windscreen. And I thought nah that could never happen :|

Mine slipped out of my grip as I was trying to get the new one on. Total operator error... :slaphead:

get BMW original screen surround rubbers. the pattern parts are pants.

I had a pattern part rubber fitted to my E85 once and its caused all sorts of silly air disturbance in the cockpit. They changed it out when i complained.

Blimey I didn't realise it was so easy to do. Mine have always felt like they are locked open when changing the blades. I am going to be a lot more careful when I change the blades again!

After my rear view mirror fell off on a car years ago, I bought another sticky pad from Ford. As I pressed the new pad and mirror back into place the windscreen split right down the middle. I didn't press that hard :o The windscreen replacement chap said it happened quite a lot as the windscreens stress more with age.
